Re: Took my 1st Spin Class Tonight. . .

  • For anyone in NYC they are doing Pitch Perfect themed rides at Soul Cycle this week, because why just spin until you want to barf, you should add singing!

(for real tho, Im kind of excited)

Also, spinning is a craft as well, as a knitter, whenever I say spinning, it really could go either way. But they are drastically different, way less sweating and crying when making your own yarn.

Ugh, that would make me puke.

  • While we're on the topic of spin...

One of my favorite spin classes is on Tuesday night, taught by Lisa. Two weeks ago, Lisa told the gym she was too busy and needed to drop the class. They brought in a new instructor, Debbie. Last night was the first time I took her class. And holy shit, it was the worst ever. I have NEVER wanted to walk out of a class until last night.

The music was awful. It was like she downloaded some generic work out dance mix. But really, that was the least of her issues.

She was downright mean and bossy. I get that she wants people to have the right form, but you don't need to scream at them. At one point, she stopped the class to lecture people about form. And it wasn't nice or friendly. It was mean and nasty. I was seriously in shock. I've never had an instructor behave like that before. I mean, fuck, we're at a spin class at the gym. We're not training for the fucking Olympics.

So, I'm pretty disappointed. This class works perfectly into my schedule. I don't know if I should just suffer through her miserable attitude, because I did get a get workout. UGH.
    This seems pretty shitty.

If I were you, I might try it again just to see if perhaps Debbie figures out she's a spin instructor, not a drill Sergeant, and if she hasn't I might say something to the management.

  • This thread inspired me to look into spin classes. The gyms around me must think people don't work - spin classes are M-F 9am, 10am and 4pm. No weekend, evening or early morning classes :(

I think that's what I'm going to do. I'll take it next week. Maybe she'll tone it down? If not, I will say something to the management.

    Well that's stupid.

  • I just dont' love the whole "cult of soul cycle" aspect.  I'll go, but I find I really do prefer my classes at Peloton.

We are too primitive to have Soul Cycle.

Please explain this whole "cult" thing.  Google doesn't really give me helpful info.

Yeah there are a set of classes I wanted to take that are, from what I can tell, a barre/dance/pilates hybrid that was developed by a local dancer who had a successful career in dance and then came back to open a studio and troupe based more on talent and not about a cookie cutter "ballet" form.

Anywho, I wanted to try these classes out as I danced for 15 years and was in the best shape of my life. . . sadly, they are all at like 9am during the week, wtf?!

  • It's just the atmosphere of Soul Cycle.  I went to several different studios and several different instructors and it just seemed very intense to me.  Like instructors saying how much better everyone in the class was than everyone else for being there, and having the candles and trying to be spiritual a bit within it,  Just wasn't my style.

  • I will say most of my friends love soul cycle and that's great, it's just not my speed.  Peloton is much more chill about it and I"m just more comfortable there.  Plus I like having a tablet on the bike to see my resistance and rpms

  • Candles?  O.o

I mean I did say I saw Jesus. . . because I did.  Because I was about to fucking die.

But other than my near death experience due to being unfit, I don't think I'd think any gym class was a religious experience. . . candles or not! ;-)

Now a really good, deep tissue massage. . .

I'd like to start the technology at more comfy seats and then work up from there!

  • I really with to try one of those Jillian Michaels treadmills that I see on TV, where it uses Google Maps so you can "walk" the Great Wall of China. That would be fun. I like when I can see the end in sight.

I am super curious about Peloton, I will definitely check it out. I go to SC because I'm not a member at a gym at the moment and they just opened a studio near my house in BK. But its absurdly expensive and bad for my bank account. :(

Peloton is the best.  It also happens to be just a few blocks from me but I love their instructors, especially Nicole if I want my ass kicked, Jenn if I want good music and Christine when I need motivation.  Just do NOT take a class with Steph.  She's weird.
