Since this is a budget-driven question, I thought it should go here...if I'm wrong, please feel free to move it!
As we get down to the final wedding prep days (49 to go!!! eeeek!! so much to do!!!), my fiance and I have started to work out the finer details. As we've looked at things we still need and money that we have left, it's become clear that centerpieces we'd like are not going to happen. I stumbled upon the idea of having mini-cakes as centerpieces and thought it would be a great money saver! Although I realize they can get pricey, these would serve as the wedding cake (a smaller tiered cake would be at the BP's table for us to cut), so would kill two birds with one stone. We'll throw some flower petals around them and some votives and I think it could look really chic (obviously I'm not doing a bang-up job describing what it would look like).
Anyways, I love the idea, my fiance loves the idea, my usually critical mom loves it--but my dad, who's usually pretty laid back, thinks it's disgusting. And another friend, who's opinion I usually value, says no one will cut it/eat it.
We are having a kid-free wedding, so no sticky fingers in icing to worry about, and I asked someone else who's been to a cakes-as-centerpieces wedding and she said no one had any issues cutting into the cakes, so...I'm turning to you guys!
Opinions? If you were a guest, would you think it was gross? Would you eat the cake if it wasn't cut and specifically handed to you?
(fwiw: our guests are being fully hosted--full meal, open bar, seats for everyone...we're just looking to save wherever we can!)
