TOS Questions

Hi ladies!

I noticed up top @KnotRiley made a super nice post about the TOS. But then that silly billy accidently closed it so none of us could comment! I'm sure if she'd asked her husband he would have helped her so thay wouldn't have happened.

Anyways since that thread is closed and we can't discuss anything that gets said in PMs I thought I would helpfully start a new thread for all of us to ask questions about the TOS.

This way @KnotRiley and @KnotHolly will be able to openly address all our questions and everyone will be on the same page!

Re: TOS Questions

  • Awe, I got a warning for the Louis CK skit!!!

Yay, I feel like I'm in kindergarden! When do I get my snackies and nappie poos?

  • Guys: Google Adblock. Use it. All TK wants is for a bunch of turdy people to view their site for more ad revenue. They don't care about us at all, obv. As far as I know, we can ruin it with adblock!!!

  • I'm sure the TGs will get back to us. With a swing of the banhammer

  • Yes, how long until the rest of us banned? Please explain exactly what we're not allowed to post because this nonsense is (as usual) clear as mud.
  • Right!  That silly billy also told me, after she warned me for my very negative "I dissent" image that was clearly an attack against the TOS (I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt the TOS's feelings-- I didn't know computer code could have feelings, my bad), to let her know if I had any questions.  I proceeded to ask her a bunch of questions.

But oops, maybe she was having technical problems?  Because I know she would get back to me if she could just get herself logged into the website.  Silly technology and women just don't mix.  So here are some of my questions:

Why is cursing okay but posting a funny image that shows the middle finger not okay?  Where is the line drawn?  I've posted the gif from South Park of Cartman saying "Fuckity fuck fuck fuck" a few times and never been warned.  The "I dissent" image was not directed at any particular poster so there's no way it was an attack.  In fact, it was appropriate for the context and pretty darn funny.  The whole point of the image is the juxtaposition of RBG with the obviously photoshopped middle fingers-- it's meant in the spirit of humor.  KP assured me when the TOS changed that it was not an attempt to censor the boards or prevent cursing.  It wasn't an attack, I'm not contributing to a "negative environment" whatever the hell that is supposed to mean, and it's really not obscene.

In the spirit of RBG, and ya know, because I'm a lawyer, here's the definition of "obscene material" according to the Supreme Court: (1) whether ‘the average person, applying contemporary community standards’ would find that the work, ‘taken as a whole,’ appeals to ‘prurient interest’ (2) whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law, and (3) whether the work, ‘taken as a whole,’ lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.  Miller v. California, 413 U.S. 15 (1973).  And by the way so you don't have to break out the dictionary, "prurient" means something that appeals to a sexual interest.  Now, RBG is a pretty sexy lady, but I wouldn't call that image sexual in any way.  And it has obvious political value: "I dissent" reflects RBG's awesome habit of rocking, spot-on, righteous dissenting opinions.  I think RBG would be quite pleased with the use of this image, actually.

And yes, because I'm a lawyer, I'm also aware that you can't just cry FREE SPEECH to a private company.  But if XO is going to use the word "obscene" in your TOS, I suggest they actually make an effort to know what it means

I'm prettttttty sure I would not have been warned for that image just a few days ago.  Multiple posters had the middle finger in their signatures, and have posted middle finger pics before, without being warned.  Randomly deciding to target the most prolific users (like @Ashley8918, @Lolo883, and I guess me) is going to wind up killing the community here.  Unless that's what XO Group wants?  It seems @KatieinBkln was right when she said if XO Group finds the boards annoying to maintain, just get rid of them altogether.  Sanitizing them so they're just a reflection of their shiny, etiquette disaster of a corporation is going to completely kill the community.  And then we wouldn't be driving their ad revenue anymore, would we?
Does this mean I was wrong to teach my FI how to build a gaming computer?

I better quickly drop out of grad school so I can stay at home with my heels and bakeware like a quiet, non-vulgar woman.

But we have all already seen these ads. They want us to go away so we stop scaring off the newbs and SS so they get to see the ads too. Plus lets face it those are the demographic that will actually buy the super special monogrammed bridesmaids gifts that are advertised.

  • I didn't leave The Bump with the mass exodus, because there really was a "mean girl" mentality on some of the boards. I don't agree with the way it went down, but I do acknowledege that there were problems. But then they started banning everyone left and right, just to get rid of the regs it seemed, until it became a total wasteland. I stopped checking my month board because it became totally boring.

But TK does not have a "mean girl" problem. Sure, there are members who are a bit outspoken or have big personalities, and sometimes they can come across as harsh, but that's the same in any community. It has never gotten out of hand and the entire Chit Chat board has a pretty welcoming vibe. It's only when the entire atmosphere of a board is unwelcoming that you've got a problem. I just don't get this. Knot Gods, can you please explain the reasoning behind taking away our community before there is even a problem?
  • I had this kick ass reply typed out but it logged me out as I was typing so fuck it.

This discussion will go the same place it went 2 years ago. Nowhere. TKGs never have actual answers to these questions regarding the TOS.

I've been busy at work this week. Apparently I missed something.

    @KnotRiley @KnotHolly ... is this thing on?

While this is a private board and y'all can do whatever you like, I'm curious as to what brought on the change. Were advertisers complaining? Is traffic down? Or did an intern pull an idea out of their ass after clutching their pearls while browsing the forum for a bit?

What is the end goal? How do you envision a quality community? I'm curious, because generally, differentiation is a pretty good business strategy. If I liked wedding bee, I'd be posting on the wedding bee. kwim?
