Let's see, they had the Duggars and Sister Wives right?  Now this.    I guess you could counter with The Little couple.  Jen could never be considered submissive.   

I've heard of submissive wives before.   They defer all the decisions to their husbands.

Remember when TLC, History, A&E, etc actually had interesting shit on it? 

I went to turn on animal planet for the dog, thinking maybe there'd be puppies or something to keep him entertained. It was a show about cannibalism. Which, by definition, has nothing to do with animals.

My friend's wedding had vows that kind of alluded to this a little bit and it was enough to make me scream internally but it was waaay dialed back compared to this.

History still has some good interesting shows/mini-series, but rarely during prime time.   

I like How States Get Their Shapes.  The World Wars, The Men who Built America,  America the Story of Us,  Life After People are few I enjoy.

But yeah, they have WAY too many reality shows.    They are all basically the same.

Yes.  Drives me nuts.  History Channel is basically just the Nazis and Aliens channel.  A&E is just a bunch of weird reality shows.  And now apparently TLC is nothing but the weird cultish christian families and train wrecks channel.  

So much for learning!

Did you see the History's Channel "Sons of Liberty" mini series? I love those kinds of mini series and I think this was the latest one. FI loves history, so we always had that night put aside for History channel.

Actually, I don't have cable anymore, but once in a while history channel would have something good!  It just seems so rare now.  Part of the reason why I ditched cable.  But I wonder how much of that kind of stuff is on amazon prime.

Honest and non-judgmental question: for any of you who identify as Christian, how do you reconcile the fact that the Bible DOES say wives should submit to their husbands? Is there anything deeper than just "I decided that part of the Bible doesn't count" that informs how you approach it? I'd really like to know!

I have a lot of Catholic friends (also went to Catholic school my entire life and my bff is pretty Catholic in her core beliefs). A lot of my friends support gay marriage and love being active in the community (gay-pride parade in Chicago every year, events, etc). They're Catholic and read the Bible and verses, but they don't agree with the church and Vatican that everything is black and white. 

Jesus said to love your neighbors, and he didn't say to exclude the homosexuals, people with blonde hair, people with long toe nails, or prostitutes. People look at prostitutes as horrible people, but Jesus actually hung out with one. People interpret the Bible however they want, but the loud ones look at it as a way to push their agenda. I don't agree with everything the Bible says, but it does have a lot of good things in it. My friends believe in a lot of what the Bible teaches, but doesn't think everything is right in it, especially since times have changed since 3500 years ago.

I am what some would call an Evangelical Christian. I have heard of this show but don't plan on watching it because I think it is extreme and not biblically based. A submissive wife has nothing to do with being a doormat and not having an opinion in decision making.

In the case of my friend, it made me feel a teeny bit better that at least he was the one that washed her feet for part of the ceremony, because for them while the wife submits to her husband, the husband serves his wife. Just a default order of things, I guess. 

I just really wish it would be hey both spouses can discuss things TOGETHER and EACH should serve THE OTHER. They don't have to be delegated to whichever has the peen or vag. I was raised similarly and kind of get it, it just still makes me a bit ill because so many people take that as license to lord over their spouse unevenly when that isn't the intention.

God's first commandment was to husbands. They are to love their wives as Jesus Christ loved - a sacrificial love, that they would give up their lives for their wives as Jesus gave His. A wife who is loved like this would have no problem being "submissive" because her husband would never make a decision that would harm her. A husband who loves his wife this way wants the best for her and their family. It doesn't mean that she gives up her right to herself or her own opinions. In the time of Jesus and the apostles women were treated as mere property. Jesus didn't treat them that way.

You're right, it isn't the intention. A lot of men use it as an excuse to treat their wives as property/slaves and a lot of women think being submissive means never speaking up and having an opinion. That isn't what the true definition is.

I think the article @lyndausvi shared kind of addresses a lot of what @momofbride530 is saying, and it really does provide a nice reasonable take on the issue, as far as I've ever seen one at least.

Buuuuuut personally I can't get on board still. While the woman in the article made a big point of saying her and her husband talked through everything together and both expressed their honest opinions, in the end she still deferred to him if they couldn't come to an agreement. I don't like that.

Submission means to be under the mission.  The mission of your husband is to love you.  That's what the scripture says first, "husbands, love your wives".  To submit to your husband means to allow your husband to fulfill his mission, which is to love you.

To submit, then, is to let your husband love you as a husband does.  To protect and serve you as his family.  It doesn't mean he gets to control you or make your decisions.  H and I make all decisions together.  I don't defer to him because he's the husband.  We both love and serve each other.

At least that's the way I've learned about it.  As a Catholic, it's not that we pick and choose what Scriptures to follow, it's that we read Scripture in light of Church tradition.  The Scripture isn't supposed to be the end all be all of christian teaching.  And the Church has always taught that men and women have equal dignity and are equal in marriage, although people in the Church have not always acted like that.  The Church has not been immune from the patriarchal tendencies of society, so, yes, a lot of christian men have used scriptures like this to promote a very different view of marriage, one in which the woman is supposed to defer to her husband on all things.
