  • wow.    She looks beauiful.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My thoughts?

Well, her name isn't Bruce anymore for one thing so, no, Bruce Jenner isn't on the cover of Vanity Fair. Caitlyn Jenner is.

    Yes, fair point.

Although I would imagine most people can still ID her as Bruce, so for the purpose of the title, Bruce seemed appropriate. I also can't access the article- did she actually legally change it yet? Just curious.

    But you are right.

I don't know, but it doesn't really matter if she legally changed it or not. Her name is Caitlyn.
Ditto this. DH has an old coworker that transitioned and still works at the same place that she did when she was presenting male. It is EXTREMELY rude when people insist on calling her "him" or by her old name. Slips from time to time are understandable especially from people that knew her by both, but at this point it's been probably close to ten years and some people still insist on doing it, so it's a pretty obvious underhanded way of showing they don't "approve" of her, and it puts her in potential danger every time. The media really sucks about respecting this point and will probably continue calling her Bruce basically forever, but that doesn't make it okay.

People know that Bruce Jenner transitioned. If people simply refer to her as Caitlin Jenner, they will probably figure out. Maybe a Caitlin Jenner formerly known as Bruce, for the extra thick skulled/people living under a rock.

But there's already speculation as to why she didn't use a "K."

I (admittedly) don't really follow celebrity gossip/stories very much, so I didn't know she was changing her name as well although I should have assumed that.

This article was the first I saw of her new name.

Don't feel bad - this IS the big splash/surprise announcement.

ETA: Kind of odd though within 24 hrs of Kim's new pregnancy announcement...

Same, I hadn't heard the name choice before either. I was saying though that since the news of her deciding to transition was all over the news (I seriously do not give two shits what any of the Jenners/Kardashians are doing and I still couldn't get away) people would make the connection.

Yay!  I do not follow the Kardashians, but I am happy for her being able to be herself finally and for the representation she is giving trans and LGBTQ+ people.

  • Wow, that is a beautiful photo. For a split second, I almost thought it was Jessica Lange (who I adore!)

I love that they came out with this kind of glamorized, sophisticated photo to really introduce Caitlyn to the world. I know some people (not knotties, general people) have joked about it and even said harsh things, but this cover photo shows that it's no joke. It's just a beautiful person trying to be her honest self.

Its pretty simple. She is not a Kardashian. She is a Jenner

While I think she looks great, I assume there was a fair amount of photoshopping was involved. It seems every magazine holds women to an unrealistic standard.

  • Go Caitlyn! My friend sent me the cover photo and I actually had to respond... "is that Bruce Jenner?"  I think she looks great. Fantastic photo.

  • I have an honest question. If this were your dad, would you still refer to her as "dad"? I noticed towards the end of the article when talking about Caitlyn's children, she's referred to as "dad" a lot, which struck me as a little strange because dad is such a male-oriented word. Is that an incorrect word to use now?

Or is it a totally subjective case-by-case thing like, there's totally no standard for that but (obviously) if Caitlyn prefers to still be referred to as "dad" by her kids then that's how it is?

It's just confusing to me that it would obviously be shitty to refer to her by male pronouns now because she doesn't prefer those, but what about male parental titles?

Yeah I guess that was a stupid question lol. I had just never seen/heard that particular thing come up so I was curious. In any other situation it's what the person prefers, so parental titles should be no different (duh, me).

I believe it is based on what the individual prefers.  So, if the individual is a trans woman, for instance, and they want to keep it as just "Dad" (whatever reason that may be), then you call her Dad.  If they no longer feel comfortable with that word and they come up with a different name they would like to be called, such as "Mom", then you call them Mom.

In all the episodes that I have seen she has said to any of her kids that she will always be their Dad.  So I am guessing this is a person to person choice what they would like to be called as a parent.

ETA:  Not sure if that means she will want to be referred to as Dad or what.  As a child of someone who transitioned I could see it being hard to then refer to that parent as Mom (or Dad...whatever the case may be) because for your entire life you had a Dad and now all of a sudden you don't.  I could see that being difficult on a child.

"Jenner, who happily showed Sawyer a black lace dress in his closet, says he will always be Dad to his children."

  • Parental names are really a case by case for every family regardless of the gender identity of the parents.

For instance, we plan on having Fufu call Wifey Mommy and me Mama. Cause I've always liked Mama better. Other same sex parents might have the kid call them Mommy B and Mommy T, or just have no distinction made.

I call my step-mom by her name most of the time but sometimes I call her me-me when talking to my brothers. That was their name for her when they were little.

My best friends are already planning on being aunt/uncle despite no genetic/legal ties to Fufu. And one of our male friends wants to be Auntie. Whatever, no skin off my nose.

Mom/Dad/Aunt/Uncle are "special" names in a family. And each family determines who wears what title themselves.
  • What a gorgeous cover!

You can be supportive publicly yet still having a hard time dealing with it personally.  It took 50-something years for Bruce to come out.  I don't expect  the kids to be all smiles and sunshine instantly.  But I'm not surprised publicly they are supportive.    Kind-of I can talk about my family, but you can't type of thing.

    .

There were a bunch of comments on Daily Mail on how Caitlyn looks much better then Kris.    I had to laugh.  Because at least the photoshopped verison it's true.

Neither am I.  I understand why they are outwardly supportive on the show and in the media, but I have a hard time believing that they are all super happy and excited for their Father.  I am sure that they all want their Dad to be happy, but also sure that this change is probably a huge thing to deal with, understand and accept.  I can only imagine how difficult this has been for them. Yes, they put their lives out there for everyone to see, but there is a big difference between pouting some duck lips, arguing with your sisters and taking trips to Dubai and having your Dad come out as wanting to transition to a woman.
