Silver hair yay or nay?

I just asked my stylist about this, and she said it needs to retoned every 2 weeks. It is expensive to maintain, and a fairly strong chance your employer will not approve. Why not a dramatic cut instead?
If it needs to be retoned that often, you are also going to damage your hair.

Every time you apply color to your hair, the one chemical blows open the cuticle to allow the color molecules to get into the hair shaft, a second chemical strips your hair of it's preexisting color, and then the cuticle needs to be closed again to seal in he color.

Typically you don't have your color touched up or redone for 6-8 weeks after your initial appointment, depending on how fast your roots come in, and in that case you are only recoloring your roots.  Think of how damaging it would be to your hair to go through this process every 2 weeks.  I'd be surprised if it didn't become like straw within a month.

And the more damaged your hair is, that harder it is to hold on to and maintain color.

ETA:  I'd personally go buy a good quality wig to try this fad before risking destroying my hair for good.

  • Huh...so much silver hate! I hadn't realized there was such an aversion towards it. Maybe I will rethink my look. I did run it past HR and I got the green light, but now I am not so sure.

I don't think HR can legally really tell you how to color your hair, so I'd probably take that with a grain of salt.

You mentioned purple, could you do some subtle purple in the under layers of your hair?

I have a friend that currently has this.  Although I equate hers more on the platinum white blonde with a silver tinge.  To me, she can pull it off but I do think that's rare.

In high school I had silver hair for a short time as a color mishap - I was trendy before it was a trend lol.   Anyways, I had blue streaks underneath for a school spirit thing and when I went to dye it back to normal I just figured I do it at home.  I hadn't dyed my own hair before and my mom told me to go ash over a golden blonde (natural blonde).  My mom is an ash, I am not.  Between the ash and the remaining blue it was silver.  I HATED it.  Needless to say that was prb because I was in high school and this wasn't a thing so everyone just wondered why I had gray hair haha.

I have white hair (have had it since jr. high). I color it blue right now. Used to be purple. I work for the federal government and they haven't said anything. The only time I had a color restriction was when I was in the Army.

I say do what YOU want to do. When I first went purple it too some getting used to. The same with blue. But, now I'm so used to it and so is everyone in the office that no one cares. If anything it helps my clients when they can't remember my name. "My Case Manager is the one with blue hair."

And, after the wedding, I'm thinking of letting it go back to white.

  • I am 64 years old.  My hair is still the same mousey brown color it was when I was younger, except now there are some "highlights" that are silver/grey.  I am not eager to become a grey haired granny, and I can't imagine why a young person would want to do this to themselves.  IMHO, that model looks like a refugee from a goth festival.  Not attractive.
    I voted "Hell, no!"

  • It's pretty, but sadly it doesn't look as great in person.  FH plays in a band so when I go to his shows I see lots of different unnatural hairdos and I've never seen it pulled off well IRL. It's so sad because silver could look really nice if it had sort of a cool undertone. Kind of Ice Queen-ish!

Also, I'm in my early 20s and am starting to get grey's. You can borrow some of mine!

I recently had my hair dyed blonde and the stylist did varying amounts of toner, so my hair is a warmer color on top and some pieces are downright silver underneath. I really like the silver and I think next time I'll go for more toner all over. That might be a good compromise with your company- just enough warmth to where people would call it blonde as opposed to gray.

I agree it's kinda high maintenance. My idea of doing my hair is usually just washing it once in a while and letting it air dry, and I usually save makeup just for going out. It's kind of like a side-cut: you have to go all out to pull it off.

And I would guess that you look like a refugee from the country club or republican national convention.

Different strokes for different folks. I do think it looks a little better with a hint of purple, blue or lowlights to give it some color.

  • I love the silver hair trend. I considered it because I want to look older. I am 30, and look a lot younger. My first interactions with people are spent convincing them that yes, I am smart and I did earn my fancy degree, and quite frankly it becomes exhausting. Most of the members of my family went completely gray by 30, and I was hoping I would too. If it were easier to maintain, I'd do it in a minute. I think some of the older women forget how much disrespect younger women get because of their perceived age.

  • I love colored hair on others. I keep mine blonde, but my husband and close friends do beautiful unnatural colors. I think most colors look wonderful on hair. With that said, I hate the silver hair trend. I've seen, maybe, two or three models that actually looked decent to me. Most of the time, I think it looks bad.

I do like the lighter silver hair better than dark silver, but it's still not my favorite thing.
