cookout

FI and I bought our house in the fall and haven't had to many people over because we were busy working and fixing things!  Now we want to have a cookout with a bunch of our friends.  Its going to be pretty casual using evites!  This will be the first time we hosted our friends for an event!

Now one person we are inviting is a vegan.  I am putting together my menu and here are the vegan friendly items:

Chips and salsa
corn on the cob
salad
corn bread
green bean salad
fruit salad

Should I add more?  If so what else?

Re: cookout

  • Make sure you do not use butter on their corn on the cob (common mistake).   But I would be sad without butter on mine.

The rest looks fine to me. Maybe add a vegan burger?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yes!! She is one person I eat with a lot and I am very cautious the way I prepare meals for her!  She always says not to worry about her and she will find something but I want to make sure she has choices and enough!
  • I would do a black bean burger or something that has a little more substance to it. It could be eaten on top of the salad instead of on a bun.

Also, I'm pretty sure corn bread has eggs and milk in it.

Yes, I forgot to mention something about the corn bread.

Yeah I was thinking this too.  Also I have seen recipes that use melted butter as well.

I also saw THIS recipe.  At least with these kebabs she has something else warm to eat besides plain corn on the cob. And others may enjoy them as well.

  • Thanks to pinterest (love their recipes) I have a vegan friendly corn bread I am excited to try.  Will probably try earlier in case it isn't very good.  I will have to look into a black bean burger!  I have never had one!  Thanks for the idea.
  • If you're grilling then some good options are portobello mushrooms, tempeh, veggie burgers (just make sure they are vegan - lots of black bean burgers or other veggie burgers have cheese). I marinade my portobello mushrooms briefly with olive oil, garlic, salt & pepper then just toss them on the grill - YUMMY!
  • Ditto Maggie on the kebab. Just put a bunch of veggies on it - peppers, sweet potatoes, onions, mushrooms, zucchini... and grill it for her along with the other stuff.

This will seem more like an entree than just having a bunch of sides.

  • Dittoing PPs on everything. That said, I don't eat meat and I just generally expect to eat only sides at BBQs. I think it is great that you're doing your best to make sure she has food to eat!

Some vegans / vegetarians won't eat vegan / vegetarian items if they're even cooked on the same grill, pots / pans as meat items.  Is she that strict about it?  Might want to ask if you don't know.

  • She isn't that strict.  To be honest she goes back and forth between vegan and a vegan who eats white fish?  I don't get it.  She will never eat butter or cheese or red meat or chicken.  But occasionally eat white fish?  I don't know if she currently eats white fish or not otherwise I would use that to my advantage!  I really like the kabob link.. they look delicious.
