Engagement Announcements?

I'm not sure this is the right place to ask, but are engagement announcements outdated now with Facebook and technology?
I understand save the dates, but announcements????

Stay off of Facebook!  Engagement announcements are made by word of mouth, public announcements at a party (held by someone other than yourself), or printed in the newspaper.  They are NEVER mailed.  After everyone in your circle knows, you can change your status on Facebook if necessary.
DO NOT post wedding plans on Facebook!  You would be asking for trouble.

If I received a mailed announcement for an engagement, I would roll my eyes so hard and say, "Ummmm, good for you?" out loud in my kitchen and throw it away.
I would do the same.  You getting engaged is not that special.  Sorry.  It happens all the time to a shit ton of people every day.

  • That's what I thought!! A college friend was bragging on facebook about preparing to mail hers out, despite being engaged for six months already!

LOL! If I got one of these, I'd see it as a gift grab.

Are you sure she wasn't bragging about sending out save the dates?

    This.
AND - If you sent engagement announcements, I think that would then require a wedding invitation to any and all people you sent the announcement.

She's crazy, but mailed engagement announcements were inappropriate long before facebook was invented. They've always been printed in the newspaper.

    Hopefully she means STDs.
  • I'm positive it wasn't save the dates. She specifically said announcements, and asked if people wanted them to give her their mailing address. I thought it was strange, but I wasn't sure so I came to ask.

Agreed- I think a mailed announcement would suggest that one is to be expecting a wedding invitation, or else why would you mail it to me? It's like a pre-wedding invite ;).

I'm OK with people posting a "we got engaged!" status or posting a picture of their ring on FB- as long as you've told your nearest and dearest first. Engagements/marriages make me happy, and I like to drool over pretty jewelry, so post away.... but beyond a simple photo/status, best to keep wedding talk to a minimum and definitely not openly ask for people to send you their mailing address- as now you've verbally invited your entire FB friend list to your wedding.... (OP, the "you" is YOU, just some general thoughts).
