Groupon for Honeymoon?

Hello Knotties! I've never used a Groupon Getaway (the ones with airfare, all inclusive and you can travel to another country) but I was considering it for the honeymoon. Some of them actually leave from the airport of the city we'll be in for the wedding.  Does anyone have any experience with using one of those? It seems like a smart way to go, just because the price is usually unbeatable. But I'm a little nervous because I don't know anyone that has used one. So I'm reaching out to you guys! Good idea? Bad idea? "Just make sure you do this first" idea? What they don't tell you is__! Anything and everything helps!

Thanks!

Re: Groupon for Honeymoon?

  • They are good deals, but be aware of the following:

-understand the flights and flight times. I didn't think most Groupons included air, but those that do might not use the best flight schedules. Also, be sure the flights they are saying will be used are not sold out

-contact the resort to see if the dates you want are sold out or blacked out

-be aware of the terms and conditions

-be aware that these bookings are the first to be walked if the resort overbooked.

If you are flexible and don't mind taking a flight that may have a layover or be at an off time, then give it consideration.

  • I haven't done one with airfare myself, but there is usually a time where you can request a refund from Groupon.  After reading through the terms and conditions, make sure you will have time to book your travel before you would need to request a refund.

If you find one you like and it meets your criteria and travel dates.  I would buy it, then book it asap to make sure your date is available.  If you date is not available, then I would ask for it to be refunded.  I think they usually give you 24 hours or so to change your mind on regular groupons, they may give you more time for the trips.

We have used groupons for hotel stays, just never ones that included the airfare.  We had no issue with our hotel stay and I was able to upgrade my room when I called the BnB to book.

  • Awesome advice! Thanks so much. I didn't even think about the fact that thy could bump these bookings first.

  • Just want to add, I don't think taxes and fees are included so keep that in mind when budgeting.

Yup- I have been a victim of that. It wasn't Groupon, but I used a promotional rate for a resort one time. They had a group there the week before my arrival and part of the group decided to extend. so, they bumped those who didn't pay the full rate.

  • We booked out honeymoon through Groupon. We did a ten day tour of Budapest, Vienna and Prague. Though you buy through Groupon-you actually finalize booking details through the travel agency (Go-today). They allowed us to upgrade hotels as we desired, pick train times, even our seats on the plane. The process was seamless and we saved so much.

  • Also make sure to google the resort/hotel for reviews from other sites and check location on a map to make sure that it's close to other things you will want to do in that area.

  • @dreischka Did the groupon include all fees?  I know they usually don't include tax/fees so I'm curious if that's true for trips! I'm always tempted to book through groupon but afraid of what the airline fees and tax would bring the rate up to...
