DO NOT order dresses from the Dessy Group!

My good friend is getting mparried in the fall.  The wedding planning has been kind of overwhelming for her and she was definitely stumped when it came to selecting dresses for her BMs.  She settled on the Dessy Group’s “convertible” dress for all of us BMs.  The concept of the dress is that it can be adjusted and worn many different ways…which sounds good, right?  I was already having doubts about the dress before we ordered them though.  They are made of a synthetic jersey material.  If you’re not familiar with materials, this is basically the same fabric a cheap Halloween costume from Party City is made of.  Not what you want to wear to a wedding!

The dresses arrived this week and the bride is in shock.  For $140 each, we got the cheesiest, cheapest looking dresses that can’t be returned.  They even come packaged in crappy plastic bags just like a cheap Halloween costume would!  The bride is so disappointed in these and while none of us BMs would ever say anything to her (because at this point it’s too late to do something else), I know we are all so frustrated with these HORRIBLE dresses.  Oh – and they are horrible to get on and off because of this band that runs through the center.  I was literally in tears because I thought my dress was stuck on me!

So, moral of the story:

A) DO NOT buy anything from Dessy Group.  It is a complete ripoff.

B) Don’t buy anything sight unseen. (She ordered these from a bridal store without knowing what they actually looked like.)

C) Order with enough time to come up with a Plan B if needed!

Re: DO NOT order dresses from the Dessy Group!

  • You said the wedding isn't until Fall.  So, presumably not in the next month or two.  Assuming budgets allow, that's plenty of time to go hit some department stores and find something suitable.  Have her pick a color and go find any dress in that color.  It's not like the wedding is today.

Sucks to have lost out on the money.  Perhaps there are some others who actually like those dresses (Dessy is a pretty popular brand) and you can resell to recover some of your money.

The problem here is not with the Dessy group, its with the convertible dresses.  Those dresses, regardless of their manufacturer, are terrible and are only good for people who have not an ounce of fat on them.  Anyone above a size 0 would not feel comfortable in those dresses.  There are many threads on the WP board that discourage brides from having their BMs wear the convertible dresses for the exact reasons you listed.

However,  I have worn dresses from the Dessy group and they have been fine. I even think my BMs wore Dessy and the dresses were of good construction and quality.

There is still time to act.  Try to sell the BMs dresses online and take that money and get new dresses.
  • It's not Dessy; it's that God-awful dress.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I disagree. The Versa from David's Bridal looks good on VERY different body types and is one of the most comfortable dresses I've ever tried on. My friend and I are both thinking about that as our bridesmaid dresses so we both tried it on and it looked good on both of is...and I'm thin, straight as a rail, and she's a short, plus sized, super curvy girl.
  • I  also disagree.  The fault is with the bride, who ordered dresses sight unseen.  NEVER do this!

  • In general, convertible dresses suck massively and are unflattering on almost everybody.

  • Convertible dresses are tricky. The problem is not Dessy. They've been around for a long time, and I've worn them in more than one wedding. I've never had an issue.

I agree that the bride should not have ordered these dresses without anyone trying them on. Really, the fault lies with her.
  • What PPs said. It's not Dessy, it's the convertible dresses. The bride ultimately should have done more research.

I remember loving the idea but it was very easy to find real reviews stating that the concept it great, but the execution is terrible.
