Getting into the details of ring choices

Curious to see the different options for the engagement band.  I've seen alot in the stores that have a very harsh, sharp edge... wondering what options there are (and the names they are called) for softer edge bands..

Sometimes they are called comfort fit, I believe.

Harsh, sharp edges?  Huh?  Can you post a pic of what you think this looks like because all I am envisioning is a ring made of razor blades vs one made of a cotton ball.

Maggie, I could be wrong but I think by harsh, she means a very defined edge; as opposed to a softer or curved edge.

Or maybe she means a prong setting, which would feel very scratchy at first, and I was adamantly against, but I ended up wishing I had gotten one because it would have matched my wedding band better

I mean wouldn't this be a question that you go to a jeweler for?  I think they would be able to help better then anyone on the internet.

I think jewelers only carry a handful of settings because they make most of their profit off the stones anyway. 

I looked at hundreds of settings, and most of it was online.  I had to have the jeweler order it (and a couple others) to see it in person before making the final decision. 

Don't even get me started on how many wedding bands I looked at!  At one point I think I had 7 in my house I was deciding between!

I do not like prongs, so I had my custom made with a very low profile setting.  It's a split shank with a pear-shaped diamond.  There are no hard points or "sharp" edges.

I look at a ton of pictures online to get an ideal of what I like.

Well yeah they may only have a handful of settings in the store, but they could still be very knowledgeable about what the OP wants.  For me, if I wanted specific information about different types of rings and settings and what not then I would go to a professional.  I mean the most we can give OP are pictures, which she can easily find herself via Google.  So the bolded is why I said OP should go talk to a jeweler because like you know pictures just don't work.

It seems like you would just consult the Google to see different types of rings. There's a huge thread with ring pics on the Just Engaged board, OP, if you want to see ring porn.

You're just talking about wedding bands, not engagement rings, right? If so, look for a band that has Comfort Fit in the description - it will be slightly rounded on the inside, and domed on the outside.

Also, even when a band looks like it has sharp edges, they usually don't feel sharp on. Plus if it's 14K gold or higher (18k, 24k), even if the edge is a little sharp, it'll probably dull a little with wear.

Also, a lot of national jewelers have ship-to-store programs, so if you find something on their website that you like, but that they don't carry in-store, you could have it shipped to the store, look at it, and then decide if you want to buy it. But like PPs have said, you should go in to a jeweler and talk to them about what you want - they may also be able to special order something. 

I will say though - not everyone who works at jewelry stores actually know what they are talking about, so while going in to a store is probably a good idea, take any advice from employees with a grain of salt. (I work in corporate for a national jeweler, and believe me - some people who work in the stores have no idea what they're talking about.)

I think what you're asking about is the shank - if its the prongs, as suggested earlier, feel free to correct me...

If you are having a ring custom made, you can easily do any sort of top profile mixed with any sort of under profile, ex knife edge (classic tiffany look) w/ comfort fit.

If you are buying from a jewellery store, you will need to try on a few to see what fit you like best and what they have in stock/what they can ship to you.

Sharp edges can be an issue. I had to take mine in and have some of the grain detail taken off because it kept slicing me open if I bumped my ring on ANYTHING. I still have a scar.
