Wedding Woes

wwyd?

DEAR AMY: About once a month, my wife and I get together with a group of our friends for dinner. Vivian is a girlfriend of Fred's and is nice, but she has a loud, screechy voice.

I deliberately try to sit at a distance from her; sometimes this is not possible. I know Fred is aware of how annoying her voice is (his facial expression sometimes gives it away) but I doubt he has said anything to her.

I would like to say something to Fred. My wife told me to hold off. She says it is rude. I do not want to attend any other gatherings where Vivian is in attendance. What do you advise?

Re: wwyd?

  • How would saying anything really help? If this is something she's been doing for years then good luck with that one.

  • He can't stand this for once/month?

would he also like to tell her that her hair is ugly and her fingers are stubby?

Some obnoxiousness-es can be helped.  Some just exist.

Certain voices cause me severe physical pain (the migrainey thing.  It's not all noise--it's certain noises--so the sound of fireworks in the next room, NBD.  The sound of dog toenails on the kitchen floor = agony) and *I* know that saying "youre not allowed to talk" is assy and I can't say it.
(although "inside voices" may occasionally be said to siblings :-P)
