S/O - gift for baptism/party

DH and I are invited to a baptism and BBQ after party for the baby of some of our friends. Party is Sunday.

I haven't been to a baptism party in YEARS. Do y'all give gifts? Just a hostess gift? I read online that some people give keepsake type things. Is that a thing?

I think I gave money for my nephew's. 

But we're Italian/catholic.

I think usually the mentors/godparents will give a keepsake-type gift. But it certainly wouldn't hurt if you wanted to give something as well. But of course, it's not required/expected.

A lot of people gave my nephew religious things at his baptism last year. He got a couple of rosaries, a children's bible, and I don't know what else. 

I gave him money because I'm not religious.

I used to always give savings bonds to the kid for baptisms, but they are a bigger pain in the butt to get because you actually need the SSN of the kid.  You could use your own previously.  So now I give a check to the kid for their savings/college fund.  I usually make it out to one of the parents.

I typically don't bring a hostess gift, but usually ask if I can bring something if I'm close to the parents.

I went to one this summer.  My Mom said it's a gift giving event, so we added to their library.  They also did a big church baptism with reception after back at their house - full spread of food, alcohol, open house for several hours.

I would do a small gift, I think some people do keepsake gifts or religious but if neither of those sound good I'd just do something you might get for a baby (board book, small toy, etc)

I usually do either a religious item, if I share the couple's faith, or a nicely bound hardcover children's book classic, or a check.

As a Godparent, I've bought religious gifts as the duty of a Godparent is to watch over the child's spiritual development. As a regular guest to the event, I'd done checks or gift cards with a nice Baptism card. 

A kid only needs so many rosaries and Bibles, ya know?

My nephew had his baptism about a year ago and most guests brought wrapped gifts. We brought a book (one of those personalized books with the child's name throughout).

In my circle and family, we do money.  The godparents usually take care of the religious items.

I was at my niece's baptism this past weekend.  I got her a super cute sailor outfit and then a $25 visa giftcard.  There were a few religious gifts, but it was mostly toys and books.  No one other than the godparents and grandparents did something huge. Two people gave her some sort of lamb gift, one was a stuffed animal with a blanket, the other was a piggy bank.  So if you want to lean towards the religious side, a stuffed lamb would be good.
