Fragrance Free

So my FMIL is pretty allergic to all things smelly. For our wedding we are doing fake flowers and FI and I are both using unscented deodorant and no perfume/cologne. FI's hair stuff is fragrance free and while my hair stuff is smelly I plan on 'airing out' a bit ahead of time. We went and saw FMIL after my hair trial to get her opinion and she said that she should be ok with my hair smell as long as we don't compound it with other scents (hence the deodorant, no perfume etc).

Anyways, over the last couple months we've started to notice that FI is starting to have the same adverse reaction to scent as his mother. We've switched over to non scented bodywash, lightly scented shampoo, non scented deodorant and lotion.

I however am causing him great discomfort with my hairspray and especially my dry shampoo. He can be in another room and know when I've used it because his nose immediately stuffs up.

Does anyone have any recommendations for fragrance free hairspray and dry shampoo? Do they even exist???? Help!

Re: Fragrance Free

  • Sorry to hear that he's having problems!

I was mentioning Ellnett hairspray the other day. I love it. They make an unscented version. I haven't tried it before (it's always out of stock) but it should be perfect: http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod4180679 (my local Target sells it much cheaper but I can't find a link)

For dry shampoo, I usually just use cornstarch. Baby powder works just as well but, again, the scent. The easiest way is to put some in a salt shaker and apply it to the roots. Brush it out and you're good to go. I have pretty light hair so it isn't a problem, you might need to practice a bit more if you have darker hair.

yea it's definitely getting out of hand, he actually asked me if I wouldn't mind showering before cuddling on the couch last night.

I have red hair so the cornstarch may or may not work, I'll give it a try!

Hm! I've never heard of this, I'll have to do some research to see if I can get it anywhere around here! Thanks!

  • If you have a shoppers near you, I know they sell fekkai.

Also, if you add some cocoa powder (not sure if thats too smelly) to the cornstarch, it will darken it a bit. Some folks I know with darker hair use this.

You can get Elnet at Shoppers (I noticed you're in BC). If you have a Sephora near you, some of the higher end companies (Bumble + Bumble) make an unscented dry shampoo.

I have a sensitivity to scent from my allergies and my migraines. My poor FI when he met me had to change out his laundry soap and everything. I don't mind his deodorant because it's natural based, and it's the chemicals in the perfumes that set off my migraines, not natural scents.

I'm a redhead too. The cornstarch should work for you too.

  • I have no advice on the hairspray, but I wanted to let you know that I share your pain on the fragrance free front.  FH is not allergic, but has a super-sniffer and is sensitive to chemical smells and can smell anything.  He hates Febreeze.  I had to get rid of one the two perfumes I like.  He picks out our soaps and shampoos and kitchen cleaning products, he usually chooses Citrus scents.  I usually have to keep the bathroom air blowers on for several hours after cleaning the bathroom to try to blow out some of the chemicals.

Once you find stuff that works and doesn't exacerbate the situation, you should be good to go.  Good luck.
