Pretty Plum Sugar Robes for Bridesmaid gifts?

Hi all,

I'm considering purchasing robes for my bridesmaids from Pretty Plum Sugar, but the material they use is Cotton Voile, which I'm worried is going to be very sheer.  Does anyone have experience with these robes and did they have problems?  Or is there another company you would recommend?

Thanks!

Are you purchasing these robes because you know for a fact that every single on of your BMs LOVES robes so much that they will be jumping for joy when they open their gift?

If not, why are you buying them robes?  Is it so you get some oh so cute getting ready photos?  If so, then these are not gifts because you are getting them for something that you want.  How about you put the money you would spend on these robes to a gift that is centered around what each individual person likes and enjoys?  Think about it like you are buying presents for their birthday or Christmas and leave all those ridiculous BM gifts you have seen on Pinterest on the side of the road.

Regardless of how "pretty" these robes are, most wedding party members do not want to receive robes or intimate apparel as bridesmaids' gifts-let alone be expected to wear them while "getting ready" and take photos wearing them or when they are not ready (and if you require that, the robes are not gifts).

Skip the robes and shop for gifts for each of your bridesmaids according to their individual tastes and preferences (within your budget).

  • I'm sorry you have such a harsh opinion on something others happen to like Maggie.  I thought these boards were helpful places so I was looking forward to the advice of others who had purchased from that company.  And not for people to tell me what to do.

Telling you that this is a bad idea is helpful.  I think making people look all matchy-matchy while getting ready is idiotic.  You all are adults.  The faces in the pictures is more important then what they are wearing while doing their makeup and hair.  And remember that this is not a gift so stop considering that it is.

And sorry, but buying cheap robes is a waste of money.  If someone is going to buy me a robe I want that sucker to be long and luxurious and super comfortable.  Not slinky and cheap.

Not everyone is going to agree with everything that you want to do.

Isn't asking you to be introspective with the gifts you intend to give to your BMs giving you advice?   Sometimes it's not solicited but that doesn't mean it isn't advice.

Remember, if the robes are given with the intention of wearing them together and for photos, tey aren't gifts.  That isn't a matter of opinion.   And if the robes look sheer in photos then I'm willing to bet that they're worse in person.

If you really want to get something that's great for getting ready, what about comfortable open cardigans that can be worn over shirts?  Like these https://factory.jcrew.com/womens-clothing/activewear/tops/PRDOVR~64462/64462.jsp

They're normal clothing that can be comfortable and worn again.  But if given with the request that they're worn together and for photos - NOT a gift.

By choosing to post here, oh yes you were looking for opinions.

Had you lurked, you would have found that robes from anyone, Pretty Plum Sugar or anyone else, are not a popular option for bridesmaids' gifts.

Bridesmaid robes are not gifts. They are wedding props. Calling it a gift is the same as pretending that their bouquets are gifts. It's not a matter of opinion. It is factually not a gift.

Be a decent bride and get them a real gift. It doesn't have to be expensive, but it should be about them, not about your pictures.

What a shitty gift. You want pretty pictures so you make me uncomfortable by guilting me into wearing a robe I never wanted? No thanks. I'm an adult and I know what to wear to get ready. And I already own three robes.

Fact: no matter what the material, robes are a crappy idea and gift.

So, I had to google this company.  The first 15 images that come up on image search aren't from the company, but staged "getting ready" photos.  And the robes aren't that cute.  I would never wear that robe again, especially the shorter version.  It looks flimsy and barely covers anything.

I really have to wonder why people want staged shots instead of what actually happens.  Did you spend too much time in mommy and daddy's porn box when they were out and now think that whenever women get together, they are supposed to wear flimsy lingerie, giggle, and have pillow fights?  Are y'all gonna start making out with each other, too?

Ive never seen the robes in person but cotton voile is a thin almost gauze-like fabric. I looked them up and wowsa they're pricey. Personally, i wouldn't pay almost $70 for a $15 robe. (2 yds of fabric @ $5/yd +labor)

Ettiquite wise you have two options:
    A) buy them the robes AND a personal gift for each bridesmaid
B ) ditch the robes and put that money towards a nice gift instead.

If i were going to buy my bridesmaids robes, i would go big and fluffy with no embroidered words on the back. But i would also ask them first because it wouldn't be for their gifts, if it was for pictures in the morning. Which i likely won't do anyway.

I would hate receiving a thin robe and might not even wear it for pictures. . I'm super modest and don't want anyone seeing my under wear! I would also be a bit disappointed to know the gift was "one size fits all" and wasn't picked for me. I guess that may be selfish but its often truly the thought that counts. If its from a close friend I'd rather have a cheap gift that they knew I'd like than an expensive one I'd never use.

    Edit: my B ) was a B)

This stupid robe trend needs to DIAF.

I personally love robes. I wear them all the time. In my house. Where no one is taking pictures of me. I wouldn't want a robe as a gift. And I certainly wouldn't want to be photographed in one along with other bridesmaids.
  • Once upon a time, there was no way a woman wanted to be seen in her bathrobe.   My dad's best friend once showed up to my parents' house super early in the morning and my mom said, "Kenny!   You're catching me in my bathrobe!"   His answer was, "Meh, you see one woman in an ugly bathrobe you've seen 'em all."

And that was before  women in bathrobes were synonymous with a Porkies fantasy.
  • Thanks for your input scribe95.  That's all I was looking for and didn't know where to find it.

And make sure you get the black color.  The white you may be able to see through.  I mean if you can see the dead body through the trash bag then using the extra strength Hefty with lavender scent will be pointless.

Right. Of course. Thank goodness for the internet.

  • Guys, I want to dump a body. Do you think I can get away with the generic trash bags, or should I spring for the Hefty? Please don't tell me premeditated murder is bad, I only want advice about the best bags for body disposal.
I just watched an episode of Bones last night where one was dumped in a tree.   So maybe that could work for you?  Just don't do it in a park where they cut down trees because then Temperance Brennan will school your ass.

If there was one person I would call to help me get rid of a dead body it would be Temperance Brennan.  My sister/MOH is a great person but I only want the best to help me get away with murder.

  • I know everyone is so against the ROBES and I am too - but I did want to get all of the girls something they could get ready in - they all agreed - so in a mass text this am - we narrowed it down to mens oversized shirts (which shoot me if this is wrong, I LOVE, and would wear it as a coverup, or running errands on the weekend) or silk robes....

....all of the girls picked the silk robes.

    SO ROBES IT IS..

I cant believe it actually. I am also a tad bit bummed. Oops.

But my point is - SOME GIRLS OBVIOUSLY like the robes.

I mean, if you make me choose between eating moldy bread and drinking moldy milk, I'm going to pick the bread but that doesn't mean I like to eat moldy bread.

What do you plan to do with all these matchy coordinating women while they're getting ready? Do you really see yourself blowing up a picture of several women in robes, framing it and hanging it in your living room?
