Order of family seating

What is the traditional order that families are seated prior to the ceremony beginning?

Here's who all will be walking out:

My mom/brother (his GF will be sitting down already, and my stepdad is escorting me)
FI's sister and her 2 boys
FI's mom and stepdad
FI's dad and his GF

Also when should FI and his best man come out?  Before or after the families are seated?

Re: Order of family seating

  • Generally the seating of the mothers is the signal that the processional is beginning. All the rest of the family should be seated normally at any time when other guests are doing so. The officiant and groom and best man can take their places before or after the mothers are seated.

The normal order would be MOG then MOB, but it is up to you depending on family dynamics and how you and FI feel as to whether you include his father and GF (and I would put them before MOG) in this line-up.

  • Groom's Sister, escorted by her 2 sons, if you're having them seated formally
    Groom's Dad and his GF
    Groom's Mom and her husband
Bride's Mom and Bride's brother - this is the musicians cue to start the processional

  • Thanks to both of you!
