Honeymoon booked!

My FI and I just booked our honeymoon. We decided to go on a Western Caribbean cruise that leaves out of New Orleans and goes to Cozumel, Belize, Honduras, and Costa Maya (Mexico). My FI has never flown or been on a cruise.

I'm looking for tips on anything to do in New Orleans or shore excursions at any of the ports. I'm also looking for tips on what to do to calm my FI down about flying.

  • Check out cruise critic for port specific advice.

Regarding flying - I am terrified!  I forced myself over the years because I love traveling and seeing new places.  Last year I discovered Xanax.  My doctor wrote me a prescription.  Life changing.  Don't use it for the first time flying though - try it out at home a couple weeks before to make sure you don't have any negative reactions.

Read the tips on cruising at the top of this page.

Cozumel is tourist central.  You can just take a cab to the shops and walk around.  Watch your wallet!  There is a beautiful park called Chankanaab, that will probably be offered as an excursion.  My DH and daughter really enjoyed it.

Costa Maya port is in the middle of nowhere.  You really need to spend money on an excursion at this stop.  There will be several excursions offered that take you to Mayan ruins.

  • Might I suggest having some over-the-counter Dramamine on hand if he's never flown or been on a cruise before?
  • New Orleans has amazing food, a great music scene and lots of history.  Definitely check out yelp and find a nice restaurant that traditional New Orleans food, like gumbo and Cajun dishes.  The food is amazing.  Also, don't miss café du monde for beignets.  They are amazing (even if they are just fried dough with powdered sugar.  Definitely take a walk along the river, and see the city.  Bourbon Street is he crazy party street where you can bar hop and try a hurricane, or hand grenade.  And the don't have an open container law.   If you have time, a bayou tour is a lot of fun.  You can see wildlife and alligators.  A friend of mine got to hold one.  I've been to the zoo, but it wasn't that amazing.  The trees in the park near the zoo are beautiful.  And my fiancé said the world was II museum is very interesting and worth the trip if you like history.  They have plenty of walking tours.  I've done the ghost tour 3 times already.  I haven't been to the mardi gras world, but it's a warehouse where they make the floats for the mardi gras parade.  I know multiple people who stopped there and enjoyed it. It's a beautiful city! Enjoy! And enjoy the cruise! :)
