Washer & Dryer - sales & suggestions, please

So my our washer died, a few months ago. I've been doing laundry at my parents - great for the water bill, but super lame of me.

I LOVED my front load washer, it came with house and was roughly 18 years old when it died. It was a beast, rest it's metal soul.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Anyone seen any amazing deals with Labor Day sales? I was thinking about waiting until black Friday, but hoping there is something awesome out there at a great price this weekend.

Help a knottie out ;) TIA!

  • Lowe's has some good sales over labor day. I know this because we're in the process of moving into a new house that needs a lot of work, so I've been stalking Lowe's sales.

If you open a card with them, over Labor Day they're doing 18 months no interest financing, or 10% off your first purchase, plus all their appliances I think are on sale. The dishwasher I'm obsessed with is $200 off.

I love love love my new Samsung washing machine. We just bought the one with the built in sink - CLICK. I've had it for a few weeks and have zero complaints or regrets. I want to get the dryer that goes with it, but our current dryer is fine so that's on the back burner for now.

ETA - this model is usually on sale at either Lowe's, Home Depot or Sears pretty consistently so there's never a reason to pay full price, even if you don't purchase over the weekend. I'm actually kicking myself now for not waiting until Labor Day sales because I could've saved even more off the original price.
  • We have a Whirlpool Duet set. LOVE the dryer, HATE the washer.

I'm really not a fan of the front loaders - the seal gets gross and smells bad and it has to be left open all the time.

  • @novella1186 - do a change of address thing with the post office and ask about coupons for movers. Lowes and HD will send you 10% coupons for a few months. Our cat also "moved" to our house so she got coupons for a while too. Maybe your beagle could move a few months after y'all do... :)

Mine is in the basement, so I can leave it open. I never had a problem with my old one, but I do worry it's bc it was old and they don't make stuff like they used to... My clothes just seem cleaner IMHO with a FL and less water is a always a plus :)

  • Go to the Sears Outlet on Sawmill Road!  They have scratch-n-dent models (some are so minor you have to really look hard for the dents) at a discount. Our laundry room is in the mud room off the kitchen and connects to the garage.  We knew there is a HIGH liklihood of dents in that location so we weren't worried about it being perfect.

We had to buy a new set last May when we moved and we saved about $500 on a matching set over regular store prices.  We went with Maytag, the washer is a top loader HE model without the agitator.  I think we payed about $900 for both, including delivery.

I was tempted by the "pretty" models with bright colors and fancy options, but I knew that we would be the only ones to see them and I wouldn't use most of the options.

  • DO NOT buy from Best Buy. That is my #1 suggestion. FI and I had a horrible experience with them. They lost our order 3 times and then when they finally delivered it, they didn't install half the appliances (even though they were supposed to) because they brought the wrong parts.

I'd recommend Lowe's or Home Depot. They usually have great sales every holiday, and both stores offer nice discounts if you apply for a store card. We have the Whirlpool Cabrio Washer and Dryer. I love them! They are very quiet and do a great job.

I was also going to suggest a "scratch and dent" type place. FI got our set from one of those and it's perfectly fine, he said that the dryer had a scratch on the side when he got it, so that's why it was discounted.  They still came and delivered it and set it up too.

You could also check out local appliance stores.  Often their prices are the same or cheaper than the big box stores and they can haggle on pricing sometimes.  We got all of our appliances for our new house at a local store, and the salesman was super knowledgeable and helpful.

That IS genius!  Nermal and Einstein will definitely require their own changes of address when we move.

You know, if I had to do it over again, I would have gotten a top loader washer instead of front loader.  I am all about saving water, but sometimes  you just want to soak something and I can't do that with my Samsung front loader.  It does a good job, but I wish I had a top loader.

I freaking love Lowe's. Bought all our appliances there.  They are the number 2 appliance seller behind Sears.  I never go to Sears.

  • FYI for those who love saving water with the front loaders...  They now make high efficiency models with a top loader. Benefits of lower water bills without having to keep the door open for the seal to dry out.  That just isn't an option where our laundry is located.

Ours is an HE top loader with no agitator. I'm saving money with less water usage and my clothes are coming out so much softer now that I'm not using a machine with an agitator.

I was going to recommend the Sears outlet too!  That's where we got ours, a pair of LG for I think around $800 or so.  There were a few small scratches/blemishes but on the sides that you don't see, so it's worked out well for us!
  • I have a HE top loader with no agitator - love it! The dryer is great too. Both are LG.
  • I replaced my washer and dryer with this set, which I love:

No agitator so it's very quiet, automatically sets the water level, so less waste and the tub is stainless steel.

Consumer Reports recommends LG, Samsung and Kenmore (Sears).  Kenmore often gives you a good value for the price.

We despise our Whirlpool front loader at our Airbnb rental house as well. It's the actual fucking worst. Yay, accidentally bump a button with your elbow and the whole cycle resets itself! Woohoo, what should be a thirty minute cycle is taking an hour and a half while telling me "1 min left" the whole time! Sort your shit, Whirlpool!

At our house we have front loading Kenmores that came with the house, and I absolutely adore them. At our old house (now a conventional rental) we had LG front loaders that we bought new - they were also very good and we've never heard any complaints from tenants. But I prefer the Kenmores and would buy them again in a heartbeat.
