Calling Creative/Crafty Knotties!

DH has a Sports Illustrated magazine that he wants to display so I bought a shadow box because I can't find a frame that fits right.

Any ideas on how I can display the magazine without permanently damaging the magazine?  I don't want to glue/pin/tape it in but I also don't want it to flop around or fall forward.

Re: Calling Creative/Crafty Knotties!

  • Could you put another piece of glass inside, to "hold" the magazine in, and then put the whole thing in the shadow box?

  • So my immediate thoughts without doing any research on pinterest are:

Maybe a make a cardboard or something frame the same color as the shadow box background to hold it in place.
You can use clips secured to the back/sides of the shadow box. Especially cool if you decorate them.
Or combine both and make a cardboard back and clip the magazine to the back, that way you can move it around and have it in a more interesting position.
You could also get brackets or ribbons and do that thing where each magazine corner slides into the bracket/ribbons and is held in place that way.

  • Maybe cut a piece of poster board or chip board to put inside of the magazine to add stability to it so it can stand up inside the box.  Then once it's on the wall, it should stay put and not move much.

If that doesn't work, maybe try mini binder clips, paper clips, or something along those lines that are minimally visible that you can safely attach to the magazine and glue or mount to the frame/box.

  • Thanks!  This is a SI cover for Ohio State's National Championship so while it isn't a collector's item I don't want to damage it.

  • You can purchase or do yourself if able, mount boards the size of the magazine.  Have the full size of the mount be the size of the shadow box.  Then the inside opening of the mount board would be just smaller than the magazine.  Then use small wood pegs that fit on the inside of the shadowbox, from the front of the box to the front of the mount board to hold them in place.  If you have them in all 4 corners, based on what your shadowbox looks like, could hide them.

Then you could add extra things into the shadowbox in front of the mount board.  Sort of like below. . .

I have done a lot of framing.  You get an acid-free mat to extend the border out to a standard size frame.  Hobby Lobby will do this on the spot, and give you size suggestions.  Then put it in your frame.  You select the may color to compliment the magazine cover.

If I can find the stupid magazine I may just do that this afternoon (today is his birthday).  I can't ask him where it is because he would know what I'm doing.

  • Hey look what I found: http://www.amazon.com/Magazine-Display-Frame-Sports-Illustrated/dp/B00E3IWRGA

I'm really glad you started this thread. I bought a circa 1964 Playboy a couple summers ago and haven't got around to thinking about how I want to protect it/display it.

  • Thanks @novella1186.  I was hoping to get something with a mat so that the magazine is better displayed.  Those frames that fit exactly don't let the cover "pop" so to speak.  It blends in with the frame.

Find a comic book store near you.  They will have mylar sleeves, which are basically archival quality plastic bags that you can place paper and ephemera in to store and preserve. You can put the magazine in the mylar, and then mount the mylar to the mat rather than mounting the magazine directly.

Edited to add: You can also get a backing board to go in the mylar behind the magazine, which will support the magazine and help it keep it's shape.

  • These are good ideas. Another option is that depending how old the issue is, you can generally order another copy of ANYTHING on their website. Then you would keep his original and cut up/ tape/ mess around with the extra one. I did that when SI had the all Boston issue because I wanted certain headlines from the inside to be in the frame collage.
