Chit Chat

I swear some people just try to be miserable. . . .it must be exhausting

I stopped at the McDonalds near my office on my way back to work after lunch today.  It is not in the best neighborhood, but I wanted an iced coffee because it's like 90 degrees out, and sometimes you just need an iced coffee.  The place was quite busy.  As I was waiting to order, I saw an elderly woman enter.  She went straight to the drink area and removed a tiny cooler from the cart she was pulling.  She filled it up with ice and left.  My initial thought was that she was homeless, or at least quite down on her luck, and it is hot for anyone to be walking around outside, especially an older woman.

The woman placing her order at the counter turned around when she heard the ice machine going off.  She then demanded a manager.  When the manager appeared, she complained about the homeless woman getting ice.

Seriously lady?  This effects you how?  I swear, some people just have to have something to complain about or they aren't happy.  How is that productive?!

  • What gets me is exactly what you said at the end, it effects her how? Why does she need to worry about it? Some people really are destined to drown in their own misery.

I did customer service at a hotel in a casino resort so I've had too many run-ins with miserable people. There were so many that would come to me screaming and cussing in my face about a problem. I would offer them solutions and they would scream and rage about why every single solution would not satisfy them. They seriously did not want the problem to be fixed. What they truly wanted was to scream and rage. They're pissed off and miserable so everyone else needs to be too.

That's why I love working in clinical research where I hardly ever talk to anyone and never deal with the general public.

Seriously lady?? What, was breathing the same air as a homeless person for a minute too much for you?? I mean come on. This is the most ridiculous thing. And just plain mean.

That woman is a person too. You can't tell me that manager-demanding-lady wouldn't be doing the same thing or possibly probably worse if she was homeless. Some people have no respect for humanity and it is just disgusting to me.

Was the manager/other staff member worried that the person was disturbing the rest of the people? I just wonder if this is a daily occurrence, or maybe if there have been problem before. If it was just an elderly homeless person who needed some ice to stay hydrated/cool off, I think it's nuts that they would get so upset, but maybe there is more to the story.

ETF: WOW. Disregard everything ^ reading comprehension failure. That person is an asshat.
  • Some people act like the mere presence of homeless people is offensive to them.  And so many cities treat them like they're just eyesores in their beautiful landscape.... like trash to remove.  It's very sad to me.  Like, why not try to help these people that are actually citizens and residents of your city?  Instead of just making homelessness illegal and calling it a day?  Sigh.
