Ceramic Knife?

I am thinking about asking for a ceramic paring knife for Christmas, is there a brand that is really good?  Anything to avoid?

If I'm only getting one ceramic knife should I get a different size?

I have a full knife set that is okay (Kitchen Aid butcher block set) but not super, so I have a good variety, but I like how ceramic cuts faster/cleaner than what I have.

Re: Ceramic Knife?

  • I don't own one, but from what I've read, they're awesome at first, but they get dull and then they're difficult to sharpen.  You'd be better off buying a nice quality metal knife so you can sharpen it easily on your own.  Chances are, the Kitchenaid set you have isn't super good quality and probably has worn down from use.  I always recommend people just buy individual knives that are good quality, versus a block "set".  I cook a lot and I have 1 chef's knife, one paring knife (both Global brand), and then a serrated knife for cutting bread.  I don't find I really need more than that. If I ate a lot of tomatoes I might buy a smaller serrated knife.

  • I have a Kitchen Aid ceramic knife and love it!! It wasn't very exp...maybe $25. I've had it for about 4 years, and it's still very sharp. It's pretty much my go to knife when cooking. I cook about 4-5 dinners throughout the week and it's holding up very well.
