Low back slip/shapewear?

I got my dress from David's Bridal, and the back is sheer down to my lower back. I was wearing shapewear in the store and it was clear I was not going to be able to wear their regular bra, but we still ordered the slip. We obviously should have tried on without the bra/corset, because when it came in, we know realize the slip shows in the back as well. For the top, I'm planning on either going braless (I'm pretty flat chested and there's some decent padding) or sewing cups into the dress for a little bit of a lift, but now we are a bit stuck as for the slip. We called David's Bridal and they didn't have much of an answer. They mentioned that they had a slip that sits lower on your waist, but it's an A line rather than a mermaid style, or said we could get the regular slip altered but had no idea how that would work. The manager who they thought would know more is on vacation so we are planning to meet with her later next week.

In the mean time, just wondering if anyone knows where else I could look for mermaid style slips that don't come up as high as right under my boobs? I looked at past threads and found some great low-back shapewear, but all of them had straps which won't work either. I'm not so concerned about it holding everything in/the control aspect of it, just keeping the shape of the dress at the bottom.

And on a side note, when we purchased at David's Bridal we were told everything was exchange-only, no returns. Does anyone know if I'd be able to exchange the slip and use that store credit toward dress alterations? We'll ask the manager when we meet with her next week, but just thought I'd see if anyone had had a similar experience.

  • Really pretty dress!!

Do you really need a slip? It looks like you don't.

If you REALLY feel you must have one, you could talk to a seamstress about making something custom, or sewing one into the dress itself. Personally, I'd skip it all together.

I don't know about the return/exchange thing at DB. I would probably try to exchange the slip for a veil or some other accessories. I'm sure they'll understand if it still has tags and obviously doesn't fit under your dress.

  • I already got my veil. :( And I was just thinking that about the slip, if I really need one. I was clueless that you even wore shapewear underneath your dress, so I was just listening to what they told me. I just don't know how well dresses hold their shape or if you really need the slip.
  • My dress is pretty similar to yours with the low back etc.  I don't plan on wearing a slip at all and the dress moves nicely without one.

I've also got larger "girls" and had bra cups put in, I would recommend that for the reasons you said, extra lift, they do make a difference.  A friend of mine had a low back dress and she didn't have cups put in, and it was sort of noticeable.

  • Such a pretty dress! My suggestions are:

    1) Go to Victoria Secret and try something like this. I used something similar from there in HS/undergrad for a backless dress and it was super comfy

    2) Go braless, but only if you will be comfortable and not self-conscious all day

    3) Have your seamstress sew bra cups into the dress. Especially with that gorgeous back, it looks like you'll have support. I'm a C/D and had this done for mine. Feels super comfortable!
