Should I opt to the Display Dress and Clean it OR suck up the extra for a new?

So I have to option to choose the display or a new gown. The gown originally is 499. The display is 249. That is almost $250. My dress is the one uploaded (not a picture of me). -It is A line with beading up top; strapless, with a satin bottom with tulle on top. The display does have a ton of wrinkles that show like crazy through the tulle. There are no apparently rips or staining. The fact that unsettles me is that I do not know how many people tried this dress on. What would you do? What have you done?? PS. My wedding is about 7 months away so I have time. I also know that cleaning be 1. VERY risky and 2. about $200 from the research I collected.

  • I'd probably get the new one. If I got a used dress that I knew hadn't been cleaned, I'd want that done before wearing it on my big day. And that alone will be about $200. So, I wouldn't be saving much.

  • I personally would want a new dress.

Many people have good luck with samples, but I would want to go over that dress with a magnifying glass to make sure that I see no rips, tears, missing beads, major dirty marks etc.

If budget is not a concern, then I would just order a new dress.  And really if you have to spend $200 to get it cleaned plus alterations then you really aren't saving anything.

  • I tried that dress on, very pretty! Go for a new one, I don't think you'll regret it x

This was what I did for my wedding.  I only wore that dress for a few hours, and I felt beautiful!

A dress that retails for $499 will be made of polyester.  Polyester is washable.  Tulle is made of nylon, and it is also washable.  If you find any stains, or just want to spot clean it, Woolite or even liquid Tide and a dishpan works fine.  No bleach!   Pat it dry with a towel and let it air dry.
All dresses need to be steamed to get out the wrinkles - even new ones.  Dry cleaning would cost $100, and that isn't worth it, or even necessary.
When you buy a dress from a department store, do you know how many girls tried it on before you decided to buy it?  No.  Why is a wedding dress different?
Congratulations on finding such a beautiful, flattering dress - and what a bargain!

A girl on my local Facebook wedding page has been trying to sell that dress brand new.  It's very pretty.

I personally would have no issue with a sample dress if it was the perfect dress and a super good bargain (I'm talking $500+ off retail for new), since I'm all about saving money.  But, if a good dry cleaning is $200, plus whatever the cost is to steam and press it (I paid $75 to have my brand new one steamed and pressed), then how is it even a cost benefit to buy a "previously worn" dress at only a $250 discount?

This was actually my issue with the consignment dresses I tried on... they weren't that good of a deal once you factor in repairing anything wrong, cleaning it, etc.

  • I would say buy the sample but your line about it unsettling you thinking about how many people have tried in on says to get the new one. If cleaning really costs $200 then there goes your savings. If it were me I'd probably buy the sample, get it steamed and be done as long as their weren't any stains or anything that had to be dealt with.
  • I think it depends on personal preference. Would freeing up $50 in your budget help you out a lot? Would you feel better about the dress after it's been cleaned. Advance of getting this dress, is that you would save $50, which depending on things, can cover a fair amount of stuff. But the advantage of a new one, you know it's clean and there are no surprise rips or stains.
  • i would get the new if you can looks like from your photo you are getting it from davids bridal i can tell you tons of people have tried that some times some dresses are on the display at davids and they have other sizes you can try on in that dress.

id rather spend the extra money if you can on a new dress and then worry about alterations they will cost less in the long run because you wont have to fix extra stuff with the display dress
