Save the Dates - Postcards?

My FI really likes the idea of doing a postcard since most of are family and friends will be coming from OOT. I'm open and like the idea, especially if they are cheaper. Anyone have any advice or experience doing postcards? They seem to be cheaper online, but then I asked myself the question of envelopes? I know that defeats the purpose of a postcard but is it tacky if you do or don't? Guess it doesn't really matter in the end but any advice is welcome!

Vistaprint.com did a great job for my daughter.  They have over 1000 designs that can be customized for you.  She chose a rather odd design, but it worked for her crowd.



Here is the one I chose and sent to more conservative relatives.




You will save a lot of money on postage if you send it as a postcard.  Putting it in an envelope means you have to pay letter rate.  Save that for your real invitations!
Vistaprint also does a nice, inexpensive job on formal wedding invitations.

I did Vistaprint for our postcard save-the-dates as well. They were super cheap, $13 for 50 before shipping and that included color front/back and the upgraded matte paper (definitely necessary if you don't want them to look like an advertisement!). 

The process was very easy - I did have to contact customer service to help one of the design aspects, but it took like 30 seconds. It printed nicely with good color and quality.

I think another recommendation I've seen is for Zazzle. I haven't worked with them, but you could look into that as well. Good luck!

Oh, and shipping is LIGHTNING FAST so I wouldn't pay for any of faster options - just the standard/bulk shipping. Got them in 2 days.

My daughter did her postcard STDs on minted.com. All these websites also regularly offer coupons so once you design something save it in you cart, and they'll start sending you discount coupons via email. That always helps!

I did postcards from Vista Print and they came out great. I saw the one that was mailed to my FPILs when it got to their house- it was no longer in perfect condition but it wasn't really all that banged up either. It got the job done. I'd do it again.

I did my own postcards. I went to office supply store, they sell postcards that come in standard size sheets of paper that you can run through your printer & then perforated to rip apart. I went with a textured paper. Then used Microsoft publisher, which was in my microsoft office package, picked the option to design postcards. I kept it simple & put hearts in the corners & then just basic wording in regards to the date, city & state, website info & that formal invitation would follow. I didn't add any pictures or anything. Then before ripping all the cards apart, turned the papers over (it took some test papers) and ran them all through again to print our return address on them. This way if we had any addresses wrong, the STD would be returned to us & we would know. With using a textured paper postard, it looked nicer. I had people asking me where I got them, and when I said I made them myself, they told me they looked like I had them professionally done.

I used vistaprint for my STD postcards and response postcards. Saved a bunch making both postcards. The one sided glossy worked great for me, didn't look like an advertisement at all. I did a photo on the glossy side on the STD. You can't write easily on the glossy side.

We printed ours at Walmart, believe it or not. We did a photo postcard similar to those you would send out for a holiday. They were inexpensive, and I just purchased some fun pastel colored envelopes to mail them in. They don't have as big of a selection as Vista Print, but the combo we wanted worked out better with what we found at Walmart.

Invitations will be done by a local party/paper supply store. They are able to take a photo of our choice and watermark it for our personalized touch on the invitations ...that's where our money is going lol!
