Wall Colors

So there's been some general house advice going around here recently. And I've been debating on this wall in our kitchen. Most of our kitchen is painted a general beige color, which is fine because it's just the areas around cabinets and between the cupboards and the counter. But there is one wall that is painted baby blue.

I've decided I dislike the blue wall. It's not a bad color, but I don't think it goes with the rest of the kitchen. I've been thinking about painting it more of a red color (something like Behr Red Pepper PPU2-2). What does the Knot think? Good color? More suggestions? I'm open right now.

H apparently has no opinion on the wall, except that he agrees the blue doesn't really match. Right now he doesn't care what color it changes to.

Also, I'm apologizing for the messiness of our kitchen, this was the picture I had on my phone.

Re: Wall Colors

  • Nice kitchen.

I like the blue, it gives it some contrast  Really any color you want to make pop will do.   What is the color of the accent room to the kitchen (if there is one)?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I think the color you are thinking about would look great, or even a more vibrant red, depending on what feel you're going for.  I love you kitchen btw.

  • I can't look up the color right now but if it's a bit orangier of a red color I think it would look great with the slate floors you have.

  • I love your red idea! I think red pepper might be too dark. I agree with @julieanne912 about the orangier red color, which I think would not only add some vibrancy but also pick up the hints of red in your (gorgeous) cabinets.

What about Raging Bull (Behr M160-7), or Fire Coral (Behr BIC-31), or Deep Fire (Behr M180-7)?

  • I would be afraid to go too dark with the color because it might make your kitchen feel smaller.  So I would vote for something a little brighter than the color you have picked out.  I liked the Fire Coral that sparklepants suggested.

  • Thanks everyone! The kitchen was one of the big selling points when we found the house.

The dining room is where both pictures were taken from. Its walls are windows/beige and then there's wood paneling on the next wall in a darker shade similar to the cabinets. The next real wall color is a lighter green, but that's sort of across the main floor. Although that wall might change too because the painting isn't very good where their couch was so I need to at least touch it up.

The nice part is that the wall is really tiny, so I'm not too afraid to have to change up my colors if they feel off. But yes, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen/dining area so we don't want it to feel clostrophobic.

  • I am in love with your kitchen. I think a red would look really, really nice there. I'm a fan of the Pepper color!!!
  • My god - that sink! I love your kitchen! I think the red would be a bit dark though. I'd probably go with a more orangey colour as suggested - it will pick up some colour from your floor as well.

  • I'm not good with wall color recommendations (I tend to go neutral and bring in color with accents) but I'll say, I love your kitchen!
  • I love your kitchen! It is gorgeous.

I don't think the blue goes, though. I think I am seeing some orange around the opening above the sink? What if you did a darker, more burnt orange in the same palate on the blue wall?

  • A red color (slightly orange-ish esp) would go much better with that fantastical sink than the blue, but I've always been a fan of red in kitchens, especially paired with beige/tan/brown.
  • Because of the  dark cabinets and granite I would not do the red, it might make it feel dark and closed in.  I'm also not a fan of red walls (personal opinion, nothing wrong with them).

What about a different shade of blue?  Something a little more warm toned?  While the baby blue isn't bad something in a warmer shade might be the difference in bringing in color without it being so jarring.

Mixing cool tones (the icy/baby blue) and warm tones (slate, brown cabinets) is difficult and I'm not that good at it.  I would try to find a blue that picked up the blue tones in the slate if it were my kitchen.

  • Holy kitchen!  I love it!

My initial vote was more of an orange, but after looking at those floors I am going to throw a vote in for a light green!  Maybe Behr's Aloe Thorn  (PPU10-17).

  • I'm obsessed with your kitchen. I love those cabinets!

I actually like the blue in the kitchen. However, I don't think the red would look bad, but maybe just a little dark.

I noticed the same thing. I think something in that tone would look good on that wall, and tie-in with the color across from it in the pass-through.

  • I  have no opinion on the wall color because I am too busy drooling over your copper farm sink and double oven and large ass island.

I agree with this. I think the red would look good, but I also prefer going neutral with paint and then adding pops of color with artwork, rugs, window treatments, etc. They're easier to change out down the road if you want a new look.
