Hangover cures

I know we've had this thread before but HELP ME. It's Wednesday morning, I'm stuck at work all day, I have the shakes, and I feel like I want to throw up. I went over FSIL's house for dinner last night and lots of wine was had. Obviously not intentional to stay up late drinking, but.. it happened. And here I am.

My usual routine for a hangover is:

Advil and water when I wake up
Bagel with cream cheese and an iced tea for breakfast
Coffee
Lots of water
Something greasy for lunch -- pizza, sandwich, etc.
Shower

Re: Hangover cures

  • I drink a glass of 2% milk when I wake up. And then more if I still feel nauseated.

I also like ramen noodles and fountain coke when hung over.

  • If I really feel like throwing up I just do.  Then I grab crackers or something right away.  That seems to settle my stomach.

Sprite and/or chocolate milk does wonders.

Water, water and more water to help with dehydration.

    Greasy food.

To help not to get a hangover I drink water throughout the night.  I call it my "pace car". I would say at least one glass of water for every 2-3 drinks.   I drink a big glass of water and take Advil before bed too.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I usually drink a whole nalgene before bed and take 4 Advil. I take another 3-4 advil and another nalgene when I wake up. Something carby for breakfast and something greasy for lunch. Tons of water and coffee.

I swear by a nalgene and Advil before bed on drinking nights. Always serves me well!

  • Orange juice or gatorade
Whatever foodstuffs appeal to me- usually something greasy like tater tots
    5 hr energy shot.
If I'm still feeling it by lunch i take an aspirin before i eat.

Also, red wine hang overs are THE worst. Always gives me a super terrible headache.
Some reason white wine doesn't do that.

    Good luck and feel better!
  • Throwing up sucks, but you usually feel so much better once you do.  Nothing is worse then trying to hold down the vomit all day.  So just get it out of your system and your body will thank you for it.

    Lots of water.

Something super greasy like mozzarella sticks, pizza and fries/onion rings.

But generally, you just need to ride it out.  The stuff above just helps me to feel some what better, but I have found that nothing ever cures a hangover.

  • The only thing that will really help is hydrating throughout the day. I've tried everything - Pedialyte, pickle juice, greasy food. Every remedy that is talked about has never really helped me.

And now being in my mid 30s, hangovers last 2-3 days. So my advice is to drink water while you are drinking, AND drink a ton of water before you go to bed. Drink as much as you can possibly stand before going to sleep. That has actually saved me from a few hangovers.

I've actually started doing that (obv. not last night) and after a glass of wine, I'll fill it up with water and drink the water before refilling it with more wine. I get some funny looks from friends/family but then they all go "oh that's smart!"

  • Diet coke and pizza. Never fails to make me feel better, at least temporarily. I mainly just have to ride out and hope I feel better by the end of the day.
  • I eat my way through it. Basically I am a human garbage disposal. I only drink soda or vitamin water when I'm hungover

You should just puke and get it over with.

After that, lots of water, giant soda and a greasy slice of pizza or greasy burger if you can handle it.

Next time, stay hydrated while you're drinking and eat the greasy thing before you go to bed.

Coconut water is my savior when I am hung over, one of those and then water, water, and more water during the day!

My mom's friend just told me about Nux vomica, apparently you do 30c under your tongue when you are going to bed after drinking too much. Haven't tried it yet but she's in her 60's and swares by it. Has anyone else tried it?

  • So I used to take advil or ibuprofin before going to bed to prevent a hangover, but I work for a beer company and went to a training last week where I learned that this actually does nothing for you. Your liver is responsible for processing and breaking down both the advil and the booze, so you're really just putting your liver into overtime. The trainer recommending Vitamin B Complex.. It's not going to save you from being hungover if you've drunk a lot (nothing will really help), but if you've had maybe one or two too many, it might lessen the feelings!
  • I usually go with the greasy food technique and rehydrating a lot
  • Preventative maintenance. Mexican food with super-spicy sauce before I go to bed.
  • Grapefruit juice mixed with seltzer. Then an egg white omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes, and peppers. If all else fails, Nacho Cheese Doritos.
  • I agree just getting the puking over with.

My go to beverage is a Mt. Dew from Taco Bell. It's like how people swear by McDonalds Coke, I swear by this. And while you're getting the drink, order one of everything.

This. . . except it's a B complex vitamin prior to drinking, then another the next day.

  • I always drink a ton of water and eat some good greasy food, usually Bojangles.

  • I know this won't help since you're at work, but a half of a light beer mixed with orange juice, followed by water and something greasy ALWAYS makes me feel better. The key is LIGHT beer, and only a tiny bit of it. I know some people may disagree with the "hair of the dog" method, but this works for me every time.

Also, as far as prevention, I usually chug at least 16 oz of water from my klean kanteen an hour before bed, and then another 16oz right before bed. Then I usually drink another full bottle over the course of the night.

And I agree w/PP who said red wine hangovers are the WORST. They really are.

McDonald's breakfast, now available all day! Either their burrito or the egg and cheese biscuit. ETA: Gatorade is an absolute must.

  • Guys I'm late to this thread but so worth it:
    Pedialyte. Holy effing hell.

Woke up with the worst hangover on Saturday, like puking, dying, horrible hangover. Drank a bottle: and FINE. It was amazing.

This is brilliant. Isn't Pedialyte basically Gatorade with even more electrolytes and vitamins in it?

ETA: I just Googled Pedialyte, and apparently they are aware that their product is a great hangover cure: http://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/got-hangover-pedialyte-says-it-has-cure-n358796

  • YES. It came to me in the most amazing way. I was at CVS and thinking about puking, and also had to poop. and I thought "dont' you give kids pedialyte when they're sick with both of those issues?"
