We bought a very old house in Feb and just installed new fixtures in the bathroom a few weeks ago.  We have well water and the house was vacant for several months before we moved in, so the first few weeks of turning the water on it stained the toilet dark brown.  Now it's okay.  

Ours is an extreme case but I recommend that if you have well water or are new to your house and have municipal water service TEST your water.  If you're renting ask the landlord to have the water tested.  These problems can easily be solved with installation of a filter.  Acidic water corrodes pipes.  Some minerals like iron make the water "harder" and will stain fixtures.  If you're blonde bad water will eventually stain your hair.  If the toilet water stains your white toilet brown, the water from your shower will likely eventually mess up your hair.
