Re: Venue rights

Knottie, did I say I called it those things to the venue manager? I can express my feelings toward the thing here and still remain civil and professional about the situation with the venue.
You posted a photo of the thing with whatever bits and pieces of dialogue between you and them that fell into the screenshot. You really think vendors don't read this board???
  • What flavor is your cake?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Addie, we are doing a white top tier cake (for the cutting) then lemon and orange cupcakes, definitely not traditional, but the venue does not provide any services (like cake cutting) and the caterer we are using won't cut cakes, so it just made more sense.

Hey if they read the board and come across this, so be it. Truth is I'm not the only one that finds it an ugly structure....My whole bridal party, FI, and mother all agree.

  • I said I was concerned because I booked the location based on the availability of 2 outdoor lots, and with the addition of the barn it no longer made that lot useable space for our wedding. I mentioned that I believed it would not photograph well. I also told him that based off of the space needed for the reception, using the upper lot for both was not an option. I expressed concern that had I not emailed him to ask a different question entirely I would never have been informed and would have discovered this change on my wedding day. I expressed concern over paying full price for a venue I'm not happy with and left it at that.

Addie, to answer your question....since by fiance is only slightly taller than me I am wearing a short heel.
I have a feeling that they'll know that your concern over it not photographing well means that you think it's ugly.

Seriously. It's their property. They made a change to it. Unless you can find something in the contract that says that they won't make any changes, they are under no obligation to give you a penny.

  • I never said I felt they were obligated to give me anything, however being obligated to do something and wanting to do it because it's the right thing to do is the fine line between great customer service, and not giving a crap about your clients. We shall see how this pans out, but I was sold two outdoor lots, I'm getting one.

  • There is a good chance they will give you something just to keep the peace.   I just wouldn't expect a large amount though.

  • Yeah, I don't anticipate a large amount if anything at all. That is why I'm not looking at ways to spend money to make it work.

The goal at this point is to find a completely different location on the property that will work for the ceremony and not affect our budget.

Yeah I realized that right before my last response, I realized this person is one that actually doesn't want responses. So I just let her hear what she wanted to hear.

  • What are you going to do if it rains?   Do you have a budget for inclement weather??

Sigh. Banana, if you had read the thread you'd already KNOW that she's put deposits on tents that she doesn't plan to need to use because it's California in June.

Sorry. I must have missed that in between the barn/trough/ugly spiral aisle hooha.
  • Am I the only one who isn't all "ugh that is so ugly" over what is being built?  It looks to me like a large permanent canopy.  Is there an actual barn being built, because that picture isn't of a barn. Maybe I am just confused as to what is being built.  If it is just this permanent canopy it could be nicely decorated (if you want) and the ceremony could be held underneath but still with a very outdoors feeling.

Shit happens and you need to be flexible.  This is a good rule for life in general.

  • Oh man, I KNEW the username sounded familiar. Coffee Girl. Good times.

Oh, and BTW - June in Southern CA can be hot as balls, so there is actually a decent chance you WILL need the tents you rented. And considering what the venue is building is more of a permanent canopy than a barn, why not just suck it up and use the structure they are building? It's actually not that ugly... If anything, it would save you money on backup tent rentals.

I mean, it's not the most beautiful structure mankind has ever created.  But it's also not the hideous monstrosity that OP is making it out to be.
  • You know, everyone talks about their vision.

    Me?

I had a vision of love, and it was all that you've given to me.

I had a vision.   I always wanted a beach wedding.  Mother Nature squashed that vision.    Oh well, the ultimate goal of getting married was still accomplished.

Plus I have one hell of a story to tell.  I mean you can't make up the fact that 2 people from the islands come to NJ to avoid hurricanes and get hits by one anyway.     Tent collapsing in the morning (before event).   Cake collapsing. Side-way rain coming through the house doors and windows.   Guests drinking during the ceremony.   80 year olds tearing up the dance floor. 50-70 years olds attaching the candy bar. Guests having a blast drinking, eating and dancing.

Granted mine was all last minute stuff.   A lot of people would love to have 8 months to make changes when the orginial plans fall through.

I find it pretty ugly. Given the choice of using that or having my guests in the nice outdoor area sit at their tables during the ceremony I would take the latter every day. I would start thinking outside your vision to what is the best of the remaining options.

Scribe, I am working the logistics on using a small secluded area of the property for the ceremony. I agree it's pretty ugly, which is why I'd prefer to not use it at all.... seems everything I say gets muffled by people treating me like crap. .. that's cool. .. through all the rude comments I found a solution that will hopefully work. ... not what I wanted, but it will work.

Whoever said the being able to negotiate a coffee bar. .. that would have been awesome. .. but the all inclusive venues in so cal were all at least double our budget, so we had to go with the venue only style place.

I'm actually aware of the weather in so cal. .. lived there all my life. .. should be in the 80s to low 90s.... that's hardly "hot as balls" for anyone who lives there. ..ie, all our guests. .. it will also be in the evening as it starts to cool, so the heat is not much of an issue.

I would rather have to use my back up plan honestly. ... at least those tents are not that bad visually. As I stated before, I called it a "barn" because that is what the venue is calling it. No I don't believe it's a barn, is just an ugly structure with a roof, apparently 2 walls (according to the venue. .. these are not shown in the photo), and some ugly wooden planters along the outside.

Please take a picture of this structure after it is built because I have a funny feeling it won't be nearly as ugly as you are making it out to be.  You are only thinking it is that ugly because you are pissed that your original vision has been compromised.  Time to take the blinders off and realize that things may not be as bad as you are making them seem.

  • I lived in the USVI for 15+ years.  I worked on a sailboat. I still consider high-80's-90's hot as balls.  I was always the one looking for shade.  Even on the boat I was always on the shady side.

Too hot for many people to be outside without cover. I grew up in CA, and even in the Bay Area (which is generally cooler than Southern CA) can easily get up to the high 90s in June. And evening does not always mean a significant drop in temps, especially since the sun doesn't set until 8pm or later. Just pointing out that there is a good chance that (if you care about your guests' comfort,) you will have to use your tents - which, in terms of coverage, are probably the same as this permanent canopy that the venue created.
