When to ask groomsmen

My FI and I are 6 months out from the big day.  I have already asked my MOH and BM's a while back, but he has yet to ask his GM.  I know he has been a little torn, and doesn't want to leave anyone out, but I think he has finally decided for sure who he will have. I'm just wondering how far in advance the guys will need to order their suits.  I assume it's not until a lot closer to the actual day, but I want him to give his GM enough notice.  Not too sure if he's putting off asking because he hasn't fully made up his mind or if he is just forgetting  (I know it's not as big of deal for him like it was for me).  I don't want to be that annoying FI and keep asking him about it, though.  Anyone with a similar situation or any advice would be appreciated.

When he asks them and they say yes, his next question (to each guy individually) is to ask what their budget is for attire. Y'all will go with the lowest budget. That will determine where you'll get suits from and better answer your question.

With our GM's budgets we ordered from Macy's so it was just a matter of shipping time. 10 days I think. The guys appreciated that we had them buy suits (basic black) vs. renting so they could use them again.

  • At 6 months out, I think your FI is fine to ask his GM now.  Then ditto everything Southernbelle said.

Your FI ought to ask your groomsmen soon, because they may need to start planning time off (if needed) and to make sure they're around for the wedding. My FI was also dragging his feet on asking his groomsmen but when I told him this, he got on it.

And the groomsmen tuxes for our wedding are through Mens Wearhouse, and I think their deadline is 2 weeks out at the absolute latest (they'll start bugging you about a month out).

    EDIT: Grammar.

  • I think now, or very soon, is the time for your FI to ask his groomsmen, if your date is 6 months away.
  • It depends on how they will be getting their suites, and how reliable the guys are.. 6 months is enough time to plan ahead, I would nicely say, "babe you need to make sure they are logistically able to say yes, and giving them 6 months notice to get a tux, time off work, travel arrangements is hopefully plenty, but if you wait much longer some may not be able to because you didn't give them enough time."

So if you are renting, they have to go to the place at least three times, measured, pick up/fitting, drop off.. all of them take 30 minutes or more depending on how busy the shop is. We used Men's Warehouse and went two weeks early to get my sons suit, and the GM were measured 5 months out, I think 2 weeks is a hard deadline, and they will remind you a month out who has not been measured.

If buying, then the only thing he has to decide is colors, and if they will go as one to shop or not. (my H tried to make each trip with all the GM, is why I say this)

I know that my H dragged his feet, for some reason, and I had to nudge him like this around the 6 month mark, I ended up having to gave him a deadline, but he is a procrastinator, and I had to make sure he didn't ask the month of the wedding. He waits to invite people until hours before things all the time it drives me crazy, of course they can't come they made plans a week ago to do something else...
