Help/ Advice on Wedding Band

Does anyone have any experience with custom wedding bands?  I love my engagement ring, but it is an oval halo set ruby, and I am having issues trying to find a band to compliment it.  The biggest issue is the gap in between the two because the e-ring is a flush against the finger setting.  I have attached a picture of one ring that was shown to me at a bigger jewelry store.

I would love any thoughts from people who got a custom piece as to the expense increase for that, or anyone that has a similar shape e-ring as mine and what they did.  I have been searching and searching online and haven't really found something that is perfect, so I thought I would turn to the very smart ladies here!

A custom ring would be expensive. You can take it to a jeweler and have them measure the stone and order a band for an oval halo that's about the same size. From there you can have the jeweler better fit it to the ring; doing this would be much less expensive than a full custom piece.

Side note. If you are going to do that, I would do it all through the jeweler you would have work on your ring. This way you get all the prices up front and are sure you are ordering something that can be worked on.

  • A custom ring doesn't have to be expensive at all. My H had my engagement ring made and I'd say it was probably less expensive than it would have been at a big box jeweler. He went to a guy who only does custom jewelry and doesn't have a showroom of jewelry or anything like that.

I would definitely talk to a good jeweler and give them your budget and ideas and see what they can do.

  • Ditto ShesSoCold. You want to look for a jeweler that can make you a wax pattern or model to try on with your e-ring. They may do this either with CAD/CAM software and a 3D printer or cut the wax by hand, though the latter is less common nowadays and the former will let them match up the exact measurements of your ring.

I didn't go the custom route but when I was shopping for a wedding band the ready made ones were ranging 600-1200 and it's likely you could get a custom band in that range too, obviously dependent on diamond and gold weight.

it depends on what you want it to look like. a Plain band with milligrain would be inexpensive. A brightset pave band would be a bit more expensive.

You can also find a local jeweler, but ask to see photos of their work. I actually found a guy who is 2h away from me via instagram, and his work is amazing - so keep an eye out!

FWIW, I actually really like how gaps look with these rings.image

  • Hi @adventureiscalling , I have the same issue, as my engagement ring is a vintage round stone with a halo (it was my great grandmothers ring and has never been reset or anything).  It sits directly against my finger, there is no height and it is rather large so it would look very silly with a normal band around it.  I am planning on wearing my engagement ring on my right hand and getting a pretty band (probably an eternity band) for my left hand.  I feel my engagement ring is such a statement piece that if I put a band next to it, it would be a little too much.

I know a lot of brides do not like to wear their rings on separate hands but that is my plan, just an option!
  • The cost of a customer ring will all depend on the design. Meaning what type of metal you use, if you put any stones in the band and how detailed you get with the design. I would recommend finding a highly recommend local jewelry instead of going to a chain/box store. Independent jewelers usually have more experience in doing custom work and are usually better set up for doing it too. I know when I found my husbands wedding band, it was at a independent family jewelry store. They had options available that the big chain stores didn't even have the ability to order.
