Could use good thoughts...

I called FI's mom today just to see how she was doing. She finished chemo a month ago and was excited because her last scan had showed that she was clean. She was having back pain again and they called her back into the hospital. It looks like it's back and very close to her spine, they are talking about having to do a much more aggressive chemo because the cancer they think it is is more aggressive than the last time. They will know more tomorrow but I'm a mess, I can't tell FI because she hasn't told any of the kids yet, I just happened to call her today and say hi and she told me.

I love her as if she was my own mom, I hate that this is happening to her and I feel so helpless!

They cannot tell if it is the same cancer as before without a biopsy.  Chemo can do amazing things.  The last time I walked into my eye doctor's office, he said "I didn't think I'd ever see you again!"  (He has foot in mouth disease.)  I was supposed to have died years ago from my cancer, but I'm doing very well, and still on chemo.  I will be on some form of chemo for the rest of my life.  This new chemo is not without side effects, but I am enjoying life.  It is actually easier than the last chemo.  (I have had three.)
Good luck to your FMIL.  She could have a long and happy life with modern medical treatment.  It isn't in our control.  Thank you, God, for chemo!

PS,  Many communities have support groups for families dealing with cancer patients.  You might want to check into this,

  • Sounds like a big shock when she was so excited about her last scan being clear.

@CMGragain nailed it with her post.  It's so true that chemo can do amazing things!  There are options, though there's nothing wrong with wanting second opinions or taking time to make decisions about treatment.

It sounds like you have a great relationship with your FMIL, if you're calling and checking in.  I think I might feel uncomfortable hearing this update and not sharing it with your FI, though.  I hope she called him soon after.  But as for things you can do, keep it simple.  Offer to bring by dinner sometime, or take her out to a movie. Don't be offended if she doesn't take you up on things either, the offer can be enough sometimes.

You can't take away her cancer, but you and FI can be there for her!

  • Thank you everyone for the kind words, I'm trying to stay optimistic, I just hate that she is going through this. @OwlNurse, she is planning on calling them today after she knows more and they discuss treatment options. They should get results back from her tests and know what they are dealing with, I just happened to call and say hi which is why she told me before she was ready to. @CMGragain, I am glad you are enjoying life, your story is very inspirational and it is nice to hear about it.

  • Well, cancer sucks, but so does diabetes, epilepsy, and a lot of other incurable diseases.  Life is good.  T & P for your FMIL.

Yes, that is how it is done.  Just one day at a time.  (I have reservations for a trip to France next June, but travel insurance, just in case I'm not around to go.)
