Dressy Casual-HUH?

I received a STD for a wedding next year.  Went to the couple's website, which was written on the STD.
Listed Attire-dressy casual. I don't even know what that means!
This is why it is rude and confusing to guests to list "attire" for a wedding if it is not a black tie event.  When I attend a wedding, I normally wear a short cocktail dress (unless it's BT). I will wear the same to this wedding, regardless if it is too "dressy" for "dressy casual."

Re: Dressy Casual-HUH?

  • To me, "dressy-casual" means something you might wear to church, like a seasonally-appropriate dress or skirt/pants and nice blouse/sweater and slacks or khakis with a dress shirt or polo.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • This is why it is a faux-pas to tell your guests how to dress.  There is no such thing as "dressy-casual".

  • To me that means nice but not black tie. I would wear your cocktail dress and cute flats. Better to be over dressed than under.....so long as you don't show up in a bridal gown. :)

Wear what you feel comfortable in. It's ridiculous and too ambiguous.
  • According to Emily Post, jeans and a nice top are ok. I'd totally show up in jeans, a fancy top and heels if an invite said dressy casual.

That's ridiculous. Where is the wedding being held? Do you know the ceremony time yet? That would be the only thing that I potentially let dictate my attire...otherwise I pretty much wear the same thing to every wedding I'm invited to - a nice dress, nice shoes (heel height/shoe dressiness dependent on location), and jewelry that's dressy or more fun based on time of day and location.

ETA: H always wears his suit to weddings. If we get there and find out it's really casual or outdoors and hot, he'll lose the jacket, but that's it.

  • If I saw that, I'd wear a cottony dress with maybe a cardigan/wrap, with wedge or flat sandals.

  • If I saw that I'd think nice top with a pair of nice jeans...
  • I would ignore the dictated attire and focus more on where the wedding is being held and what time of day it is occurring.

  • Thanks, all! Early afternoon wedding.
