Help me shop for DH, please!

So DH's birthday is next week and Christmas is around the corner.  He really wants a new home entertainment / surround sound system.  I'm totally clueless and don't want to walk into a store and let the salespeople attempt to sweet-talk me.

What do you have?  Do you like it?  Any tips?

I'd like for it to be wireless and under $200.

  • I didn't buy ours, but we have an LG with wireless subwoofer that is good.  Not sure the model since it was bought about 3 years ago.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I ordered my car stereo from crutchfield.com and I think they have a reputation of being very helpful!

  • We have a Bose sound bar; it also has a subwoofer that we have sitting near the corner of the living room. It's pretty basic in comparison to some of the other ones we looked at, but I like it a lot and the subwoofer is small enough that we were able to set it under the shelf on our end table.

Sonos has some great speakers... You can get one or two now and your H and build off of it as he wants (or you can for future gifts!) it also has a great app that syncs all of your music/audio apps into one and you can control the speakers from there... I also love that you can play something on one speaker and something else entirely in another room.

    ETF: Sonos, not Sonia autocorrect!

I can ask DH for which one he recommends and let you know. He works at sears so he will tell me from the ones they have there.

I second Sonos. We have one speaker we received as a gift and it's very effective (loud) with good sound quality. We plan to buy a few more speakers for outdoors/different rooms.

    @holyguacamole79

I asked hubby and he told me to ask you a few questions to help narrow down:

    1) how much space do you have for setting up the system (space as in tv stand, etc)?
    2) do you want to mount the system on the walls/ceiling (speakers)?
    3) do you want it to have either and/or dvd/blue-ray/3-D?
    4) would you consider a sound bar over a regular surround system?
    5) do you want a wireless subwoofer?
    6) do you mind sacrificing performance over convenience?
    7) is the budget set in stone or could there be some wiggle room?
