NWR questions about thank you notes

Just a few things I'm wondering about.

First, when you write thank you notes (whether for wedding, birthday, christmas, whatever), and someone gave you a bunch of little things, do you list ALL the things in the thank you note?  It always sounds kind of awkward when I do that.  Sometimes I just say "gifts" and then specifically mention a couple of them.  Is there a proper etiquette for that?

Second, I'm a teacher.  Should I be writing thank you notes to students when they give me gifts?  I usually get a few gifts from students at Christmas time (like cookies or a bottle of lotion).  I've always kind of thought of them as "thank you" gifts, and you don't write thank you notes for thank you gifts.  BUT maybe I should treat them like normal Christmas gifts and write the girls a note?  Sometimes I wouldn't have a chance to give them the note until I see them again in January.  What say you?

Re: NWR questions about thank you notes

  • I've always considered them a thank you gift to the teachers, paperboy, mailmen etc.  I've always been touched when I received a thank you note back, which my teachers almost always did...  If I were in your shoes, I'd err on the side of caution, and write a thank-you note, but that's just me.

I'm sure if you waited until after the break was over to give the notes, it would be fine.
  • @monkeysip Whenever I receive an assortment I usually say thank you for the gifts and then point out an item or two and how it will be used.

On teacher gifts, I'd write a short note to say thanks. It's just a nice gesture.
