Stop saying that!

Re: Stop saying that!

  • I guess I'm the odd one out because I don't have/have never had issues with slang words. I like how language evolves and changes, goes through trends and is influenced by other cultures (a lot of the words that are "mainstream" now have been commonplace in African American communities for years- bae, fleek etc). I particularly like when old words come back with altered meanings- savage as on PP mentioned is a good one.

This totally made me think of past slang. Saved by the Bell period girls were called babes and guys were called hunks. When  I was in high school (99-03) everyone was a poser. Like "Avril Lavigne is trying to be punk- she's such a poser". You never hear any of those terms today lol

I agree with AF, bae, fleek, and others mentioned here. The word going around my middle school all the time is "savage". Two girls got in a fight, one was a savage. The test was so hard for was a savage. Dumb. I'm also sick of the Whip song, and Hit the Quan. I'm in a middle school setting though so those may not be everywhere. I'm personally really sick of all the Keep Calm and... It's definitely died down some, but hasn't gone away yet.

    Box?
I literally cannot with whip/nae nae (pink)

To be clear, I don't think anyone has any problem with slang existing in general. Don't make more of what we are saying, which was basically that these words are overused.
I guess that's my point though- slang words are overwhelmingly going to be the main words that are considered trendy/overused, because they are making their entrance into everyday language and therefore way more noticeable. "Cool" is an infinitely more frequently used word, but no one identifies that as a word they are sick of hearing because it's very normalized.

That being said, no reason you can't still be irritated by these words.

@jenna8984- I LOL'd at remembering "poser"... that was like the worst thing in the world to be called when I was in middle school.
  • I interview and recruit people for a living, so part of my job is gauging professionalism for my clients. I hear and see the phrase "on tomorrow" or "on yesterday" constantly and I hate it! I don't take much offense to slang, but I hate seeing terrible grammar in professional emails. Run it through Word or something.

(I don't take offense to slang because I use it too much oops)

  • Fleek. Where did that even come from?? All I've been watching recently is GoT and Glee.

My manager ALWAYS uses "I can't even" or just "I can't, I just can't"...however, she uses it for situations that don't warrant such exasperation. That may be why it annoys me.

Adulting! When I see one of my FB friends use it, it makes them seem less "adult" than they really are. This may also be because in my head I'm always thinking that they should just put on their big girl/boy pants and deal with whatever situation/issue that they cannot "adult" that day (which typically isn't that big of an issue to begin with).

And thirsty. My FI uses it every once in a while in a joking way, but I guess it's from a song? I am clueless!

  • "Said no (fill in the blank) ever."

    Totally overused.

Like when "that's what she said" was used a billion times a day

That reminded me of college where I was the only girl in my major so there was a period where any time I said anything someone would say "that's what she said". It was funny for like a class and then it got old really fast...

In a lot of my NFP forums (and other places), I've always known "AF" = Aunt Flo.  So, yeah, the whole AF thing threw me off at first.

I once got a text from a friend whose husband is in the Air Force.  She abbreviated it AF and was complaining about how unreasonable they were being.  I thought at first that her period was just really bad.
