Anyone have a diamond AND moissanite ring?

Hi, all!

Rather new here, spent some time lurking, and have a question for you all. Anyone have a mixed-stone ring with diamond and moissanite??? If so, do they appear to match each other completely?

Mom is letting S.O. and I take her old ring and tweak it a bit. It's a gorgeous 3-stone diamond ring; she'd leave the setting and center stone to us, and keep the 2 remaining side stones for herself.

To cut costs, we're talking about buying 2 loose moissanite gems to flank the center diamond. But I have no idea how that will look next to my mom's diamond. We'd obviously make an effort to get the enhanced gems so they're as similar to diamonds as possible, and of course will consult with a jeweler when we get more serious about this, but I was wondering if anyone here had mixed stones and could share their experience????

Thanks all :) oh, and happy Thursday!

  • I do not, but I think this would only work if you have a fairly warm colored diamond. Do you know the specs?

  • Ps. I would head over to the Bee with this question. I'm probably not allowed to say that, but it's kind of a Moissanite capital over there.

I have no idea what a moissanite is.

    Etf spelling

  • I do agree that it might not work depending on the specs of the diamond.

What about purchasing gemstones, such as sapphires or rubies?  I think that would look beautiful.

  • I think it will look like you were cutting costs and you'd be better off sticking with a solitaire and changing the setting.
  • I agree with PPs. Moissanites and Diamonds although similar in color, will look differently directly beside each other. I like @ohmrs2014 suggestion of another gemstone as the side stone. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, amethysts, are all very pretty. My other suggestion would be to just change the setting and stick with a classic solitaire.

  • If you get the enhanced moissanite, color matching might not be too much of an issue, but moissanite is so much more refractive than a diamond, that your center stone would probably look dull by comparison, which might look strange. I have a good bit of moissanite jewelry, and my e ring diamond does not sparkle like the rest, even though it's plenty sparkly.
  • @STARMOON44 @emmaaachanging the setting to a solitaire is also an option. It's what I originally thought I wanted, until those three stones REALLY grew on me....but it's definitely NOT worth it if the new stones will make the center one look cheap. Yuck.

@luckya23, not sure about the specs just yet, looking into that. Haha, definitely crucial to making a decision here.

Thanks guys, this all helps a lot. Maybe I will take a gander at WeddingBee just to see if I can find any pictures of an enhanced moissanite and diamond side-by-side.

  • I love the idea of other gemstones! My ring is actually the opposite - the center stone is a black diamond and there are two little diamonds on the sides. I also love love love dark sapphire (that was my second choice), and I think a stone like that (or ruby, or emerald, or whatever you're into it) would look really beautiful.

What kind of band is it (like gold, platinum, etc)?
  • I recommend going in to a jeweler with the ring to see what they think.

Echoing PP's, consider a different gemstone, like sapphires (which are really popular in engagement rings these days), or maybe your or FI's birthstone?

    Or, aquamarines, or tanzanites.

The side stones probably aren't going to be budget busting, and will look better as diamonds OR something obviously different (IMO). You can also look at pre-loved settings with diamonds in them and use those in yours (You'd toss this setting, or sell it for scrap metal, and use your moms). This way, they are already matched in colour/clarity/spread/table size/etc.

If you look at alternative stones, keep in mind their durability as often as you want to wear it. If you are wanting an every day ring, sapphires & rubies are a good match with diamonds. Stay away from anything less than an 8 if you want to wear this every day. As a more occasional ring (special nights out, etc) you can go lower (garnet, zircon, tanz, quartz).

Though, in your situation, I'd probably just set in a nice solitaire. You can get blingy bands to add more sparkle.

  • Yes. My center stone is enhanced moissanite and the rest of the stones are diamonds. I think it looks great, but it's also the main stone surrounded by diamonds so that could be why.
  • my center stone is moissanite and the stones on the band are diamonds. I love it. There are times you can see the yellow tint to the moissanite but for the most part I love the way the moissanite fires.

    Sorry this picture is ginormous.

  • My Center Stone is Moissanite (Forever One) and both bands are made up of diamonds.

  • I'm still confused on moissanite - is it similar to CZ? Or like a nicer CZ? Or is that not the right comparison to make?  I've never heard of it until this thread or maybe another thread in which it was mentioned.

Basically yes. It has origins as a natural substance, but pretty much all Mos now a days is synthetic man made. It has a double refractive index so can actually look sparklier than a diamond, in a blurry way. Diamonds have a crisp sparkle, double refractive (most other gems are double) have a blurry sparkle. If that makes sense. CZ is also not very hard, Mos is much harder thus will stand up better to every day wear.
