Wedding Invitations & Paper

How can I incorporate a tiny watercolor painting in my invitation?

Being an art teacher and  artist I wanted to go with a personal touch to my invitations.  I watercolor painted 80 miniature "polaroid" snapshots of the barn where I will be married.  How should I incorporate them into the invitation?  Should I put it on the front of a tri fold enclosure?  I have an example of all that I have come up with so far, but I don't love it. Curious to hear your thoughts.  I've got my big girl panties on and am open to feedback both positive and negative.

  • That is so pretty!

Could you use it as the background of the invitations and write directly on them? Maybe in the sky area or in the grass? Not over the barn. Then get an envelope big enough so you don't have to fold them?
  • Very nice.

You could put them in photo folders and mount the invitation on the opposite side of the watercolor. This is the one time I'd leave the tissue inside the invitations to protect the picture.

  • Beautiful painting.  Can you have a folding invitation, where the painting is on the outside fold and the wording is on the inside, or have both facing each other on the inside?  Then you could have something nice on the outside fold.
  • It might help if we knew the size of the miniatures.

If you want the watercolors to be the cover of your invitations, try mounting a mat on top to frame them.

You could post this on the DIY board. The crafty women may have more ideas. Please note that it's an X post.

  • That's a lovely watercolor. If you like this tri-fold format, you could write ONE thing on the bottom of the "polaroid". Like 01.02.2016 or whatever your wedding date is, or maybe the name of the venue...then on the inside, include the rest of your info.

If you wanted to go in a completely different direction, I think it would look REALLY nice if you scanned he watercolor onto your computer, superimposed your invite info using a nice font, and printed it out on cool paper. I'm not 100% sure what program you'd need for that, but I think Photoshop would do the trick.

There are lots of cool websites (like DaFont.com) where you can download amazing, handmade fonts for free. And tons of designers and calligraphers who have uploaded their lettering and will sent you their fonts for a small fee.
  • Thanks for all of the advice.  I love the idea of writing on the bottom of the painting.  Maybe I can write the date or our names.

I am so torn now because of all of your great ideas!  I also might use the idea to print it out as a background and print on top of that.  I could use Photoshop to lighten it all up and subdue it so I wouldn't overwhelm the viewer.  Thanks again!

I love your painting! I would like to watercolor my own wedding invites... but I do not know what the best way is to upload and print a physical, tangible design.
  • If you use VistaPrint (and I think some other vendors like weddingpaperdivas, etc.) and you select one of their templates where you can upload a document, you could use this. I don't see why you couldn't convert this into an image and upload it to a template.
