Makeup Rec

I feel moderately comfortable applying makeup, although I really only wear it on the weekends/events out. I never go all out, but can get myself "put together" and think it looks nice.

However, I cannot get lipstick to stay. While I typically just put gloss on, I would love to find a lip stick or product that actually lasts. It seems the times I put lipstick on (and I love the look of a colored lip), it's off by the time I even get to my destination.

Any suggestions/tips? Bonus points if it's a drugstore brand..if that exists.

Re: Makeup Rec

  • I had the same problem! My cousin is a make up artist so I always bug her with questions, she told me to apply the lipstick, blot on a tissue, then take a tissue and separate the two layers, take one of the layers and hold it over your lips then take a large powder brush and apply a light amount of translucent powder, then apply another lay of lip stick.

Ive used elf translucent powder, I think it is $3-6. It's great for my whole face. Also nyx has a great lip primer stick I've used that is under $10.
  • Lip liner is the only way I can get lipstick to stay.

  • I've found that matte lipsticks stay much better than other lipsticks. Try Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip color. It's a liquid lipstick that's easy to apply and stays on for several hours. I think I paid about $6 for it and it was worth it. I usually end up throwing drugstore lipsticks away or else returning them, so that's saying a lot!

  • I was looking at that one at Target the other day. Thanks!
  • I LOVE Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick. It the only one that I've found stays on with or without lip liner. I think I have it in about 3 or 4 colors.

I got it at Walmart and it was about $8. I only buy it maybe every other month because it last a while.

  • Try Color Pop's lippie sticks! They're only online as far as I know, but they're $5 a pop and the color does not budge for hours!
  • As a makeup fan, and artist, I constantly hunt for stuff. So far Maybelline and NYX has been the best for drug store brands. Go for something matte. Extra points if you can buff {with a tooth brush or lip scrub} ahead of time to take any dead skin away, add a small amount lip balm to keep moisturized and it should be set to go!

I also have suggestions for higher-end items, but those two brands are ideal for drugstore brands!
  • Not a drug store brand but the bare minerals lip oil balm is the best I've found. It felt like a thicker, colored Chapstick than a lipstick.

I also like the Smashbox liner with the be legendary lip gloss. I wore this for more wedding and only retouched a few times throughout the night.
  • surprised no one has mentioned a lip stain! I don't know any drugstore brands, but i'm sure you can experiment, just make sure they have a good return policy. My favorite is "still stay all day liquid lipstick" - not sure if it's a true stain, but it looks great and stays for ages. Just be careful when you put it on, if you color outside the lines wipe it off asap cause it will stain!
  • @Knottie1453538985  Lip stains aren't typically carried at drugstores yet and many are very drying. Also liquid lipstick isn't the same as lip stain, but yes the staying power is great.
  • I've never had any luck with any drugstore brands, so this is a good question!  Someone asked this on another board and "mac" and "stila" came up as great brands.  But no drug store brands, nope.  :(

I get $3.50/off $10 coupons at ulta a lot (also easy to find online).  Do you have that?  Maybe you could ask someone there for their opinion and also get some money off?  I know everyone has a Sephora but I'm not sure on the coupon flow with them.

  • @CharmedPam  unfortunately Sephora doesn't do sales often, but for those who carry VIB/VIB Rouge cards they do occasionally have percentage off. Also their fb/twitter they hold giveaways that you can win gift cards.
  • For drug store stuff, I like L'Oreal Infallible Lip Color. I has a lip color that dries, but a top gloss layer.  I've had good luck with it lasting most of the day and not feeling overly dry.

  • My go-to lipstick that stays is NYX matte. I line (and fill) my lips with a nude lip liner, apply the lipstick, and if I need moisture or want a glossier look I dab some vaseline on top.

I swear by lip liner, it's the only thing that keeps any of my lipstick from sliding off.

  • I love mac retro matte, but obviously that isn't a cheap price point. However, avon have just launched a matte lipstick that I am dying to try that claims it is just as good as the mac matte but for a fraction of the cost. If you have avon where you are you might want to try. I wear the matte lipstick almost every day and trust me, it lasts. If this avon version is as good as it says I will be a very happy bunny. I believe its called 'perfectly matte'.

  • I wore the Stila Stay All Day liquid lipstick to a Christmas party and had a lot of trouble with it, especially while eating. I want to wear it for the wedding so I'm going to get a lip liner and try it that way.

Thanks so much for this!  I have an avon counter at my nearest mall.  I'll ask the rep!

  • update:

avon has the everlasting lipsticks on sale for $5.99 right now.  12 shades available.  The counter I went to only had 6 out of the 12 shades and none of the purples/browns I usually go with.  I did find a nice pink I do like, and right now I'm testing it out (also with mac lip liner) to see if I like it and it stays. So far, so good though.  However, the 24 hours they SAY it should last is a lie.  But it does last longer than a regular lipstick will!  I like it.
