I may come off like a jerk posting this. I feel really bad for this couple and this family. At the same time, I cannot imagine lying to my family for three years about the status of my marriage. And then having to admit it because the husband died ....

There's a post about this on Chit Chat too.  I agree.  My heart breaks for his wife and their families, I can't even imagine.  All the more reason to not downplay the importance of the legal ceremony.
