Taking a wedding dress to Mexico.

My wedding is in Mexico and we are taking American Airline flights. I was wondering what brides have done with their dress? Take it on the plane with them? Is it considered a carry on? a personal item maybe? Held on to it, hung it up somewhere, laid in in overhead storage etc....? Or have brides stuffed it into a suitcase(I hope not)? Any recommendations? Thanks!

I flew WestJet to Hawaii with mine.  I did pre-boarding (for those who needed more time to board) and laid it flat over the suitcases in the overhead bins.  There are no closets on WestJet flights, cos there is no first class.  I had no issues

Call the airline and see what they could potentially offer if needed.  And get a cart in the airport.  Hauling that damn dress on the thin wire hanger was heavy and painful on the hands.

This is a hard question to answer because it really depends on the jet and the crew. We flew US Airways first class to LAX and the flight attendants flipped out about me hanging my dress on the first class coat hangers. My dress was a simple sheath dress and no heavier than a winter coat. They were also giving me a hard time because it was in a garment bag and they couldn't see the contents. After a lot of disagreement, they finally let me hang it and let me keep the garment bag on.

When we boarded our Air New Zealand flight and our Qantas flights (all economy class), the crew gladly hung my dress in their closets up front. I didn't even have to ask- they saw the garment bag, asked if we were getting married, and they were happy to assist.

    ETF my poor sentence structure

As long as it doesn't exceed the amount of carry on luggage you are allowed, you should be able to bring it on. If you are in the business class/first class cabin, you will be able to hang in closet if one is available or place on top of luggage in the overhead bins. Expect it to get a bit wrinkled and you will be fine.

Thank you! I'm thinking that's probably what I'm going to end up doing! Placing it in overhead.  I'll call the airline tomorrow.  And thanks for the tips!

  • I put mine in a wheelie bag with lots of tissue and ironed it at our destination (it was a verrrry simple dress and the person who made it recommended ironing). Good thing I took it carryon, too, because our luggage was not in Dublin when we arrived. We got it the next day though
