Tipping hair and makeup

I'm providing hair and makeup for all my girls. The h&m people will come on location. For all of us, it will come to a grand total of slightly over $2200.00. I tip 20% on top of that, right? Because my DOC is telling me that tip should be included in their on-location cost for something that pricey, but according to the contract it isn't and I didn't want to insult the lady I've been in contact with by asking.

Re: Tipping hair and makeup

  • How many people are getting hair and make up? How many people are doing the work on them?

Does the contract specify that tip is not included? Or is it just not stated? It would have to be a lot of people for me to tip $440...that seems really steep.

  • I'm surprised it isn't in your contract, but yeah I would think you need to tip as you normally would on top of the price.
  • I tipped my hair and MUA 20%...they both work for themselves and the price didn't include tip as per their contract.
  • I also do not think it is insulting to ask.  I would rather they be covered for their services than not ask.  I have asked now for a different service and just said something along the lines of, "I hope all is well.  I had this discussion come up so I just wanted to clarify.  I understood the service charge in our contract included the tip, but I am not sure if I am correct in that?  I just want to make sure all of the bases are covered!  Thanks!"
  • Ask. Nothing wrong to clarify and much easier than tipping twice or not tipping at all. I wasn't sure so I asked mine.
  • The contract doesn't state anything about gratuity. That's the problem. There's an on-location fee and the DOC is saying the on-location fee includes gratuity, but if it doesn't say, I can't imagine that it does.

    It's 9 people and 3 H&M people.
  • How much or what percent is the location fee? I definitely would not tip on the location fee portion. I'd still just ask if gratuity is included, if not do what Lynda said, tip on services rendered and not the fee.

I would ask, particularly because you have the on-location fee.

"What does the on-location fee include?".

Agreed to tip on top of the H&MU price, not the additional fee.
  • Thanks guys. I'm tipping for all but location fee. My DOC was wrong. Thanks for the help!
