Re: Well, that was a real shitshow

  • @kvruns I would have talked mad shit about him, admittedly.
    you still can ;)
Thank gods for the First Amendment.
  • I admit not usually paying attention to acceptance/concession speeches.

Is the concession speech usually done the same night?  Perhaps she just didn't have anything prepared (sad, weak laugh).

I was watching the Daily Show last night and he had an expert/author on Presidential elections.  That person said there hasn't been an upset like this since Truman/Dewey 1948.  That was the election with the famous photo of Truman holding up a paper, printed before the election was over, announcing Dewey as the winner in huge font type.

I definitely would have shrugged off him not giving a concession speech as just his usual being a big, ego-maniac baby.

When I read his acceptance speech, trying without the lens of "he is inept and is only words", it was very nice with just a few eye-rolling parts.  With my lens back on, I'm not sure if he is doing his usual "say whatever people want to hear" or if he actually believes his words and just hasn't come to the realization yet that he has no idea how to do what he has promised.

Some of his first words were about how great Hillary is and we owe her a debt of gratitude, blah, blah, blah.  I'm not going to just bash Trump on this, all politicians do it.  But it is so aggravating to hear the name calling and the mud slinging for an entire campaign.  Only to have both candidates do a sudden 180 and sing each other's praises, once it is all over.

Until he expands those libel laws!

Truthfully, there's enough to criticize him on on substance alone.  We can leave the low hanging fruit alone.

  • Ya know what really interests me? What do the 3rd party voters think of the results? If that was your choice of vote you had to be okay with a Trump presidency, right? I've heard the whole 'this is the year to make headway with a 3 party system', which fine okay, sure. But ultimately you had to know your candidate would not win so be comfortable with either Trump or Clinton.

I'll answer this as a third party voter.

I live in TX.  I watched the polls for a while.  For a little while, the margin between Clinton and Trump was decently close--like 4%.  I was planning on voting Clinton, even though I really really don't like her.  But then the spread widened, and I decided to vote my conscience and vote third party, knowing that TX would go red no matter what.  And when you look at the numbers, the spread ended up being 9 points.  The independents made up less than 4 points.  Voting third party didn't lose TX for Hillary.  And that's the case in many states...

Just because I voted third party though doesn't mean I'm ok with a trump presidency.  Honestly, I wasn't going to be ok with either, but I'm sickened by a trump presidency.

    Just explaining my thought process.

Paul Ryan just said "and now Donald Trump will run a unified Republican party."
Until he gets everyone together to boot you from your Speaker role in retaliation.
At least he spoke out against Trump.  It moved my level of respect for him from the negative to neutral.
Uh except he ended up voting for trump anyway so he ended up being a total pussy about it. Wah wah you can't come to my festival but ok I'll still vote for you

Oh I know (except maybe he didn't, since it's between him and the ballot box ;) ).

MANY people who spoke out against Trump and are higher up (at least in the minds of the public) in the GOP were quickly shushed and/or had a 'change of heart' about him.  :/ Paul Ryan was one of the most notable ones in active government to do so.  It shows the huge cracks in their identity as a party.

Ryan's definitely going to be out as Speaker. I won't be surprised if he steps down before Trump takes the oath.
  • My state (Louis.) voted 58% Trump, 38% Clinton.  We're always super red.

But that didn't stop major protesting from happening last night in my city (NOLA) for people devastated that Trump won.  Most of the protesters were peaceful, but a statue was vandalized and some windows were broken out in a downtown building.  The vandalized statue was Robert E. Lee in a focal point of the city called Lee Circle.  That statue has already been a hot topic of debate over the last 1-2 years, with many people wanting it torn down along with a few other statues that are also Confederate officers.

Some of the protesters also burned Trump in effigy.

I'm all for people protesting.  Especially against Trump.  But criminal activity is still wrong and detracts from the message.  I realize there have been protests all across the country.  But this is the one that certainly hits close to home for me.  I drive past Lee Circle multiple times a day.  I could walk there from my work.  If anyone is interested, here is a link to the story:
