Second marriage

Hi i am greek orthadox and so is my fiance. I have been married before to a non greek at a registry.. will i have any troubles marrying in a greek church in london?

Re: Second marriage

  • I'd recommend you talk to the Priest who will perform the ceremony.  In the US, prior marriages outside the Orthodox Church are normally not recognized by the church and only require that you have a civil divorce.  If your prior marriage was in the Orthodox Church, you need to obtain an ecclesiastical divorce prior to receiving the Sacrament of Marriage a second time.  Again - those are the rules set by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, but each Metropolis will do the licensing internally, so you need to check with the Priest who will fill out your paperwork for you.  Bottom line, it shouldn't be a big issue, but give yourself time to get things in order just in case.  My fiancé was previously married in a courthouse ceremony, and it presents no issue whatsoever.
