Hi everyone,
So I am getting married this coming September and could not be more excited!! I just am a bit confused on how to dance with my dad and walk down the aisle with him now that he is in a wheelchair. My dad was involved in an accident about two years ago and is now in a motorized wheel chair. He cannot walk at all anymore.  I always pictured myself walking down the aisle with my dad and dancing with my dad, which I am still so excited to do but am not sure how I dance with him now? Has anyone had experience with this? Any tips? I don't want my dress be run over or to rip or something if he drives over it on accident. Any thoughts would be really helpful! Thanks so much!

He can go down the aisle with you as long as it is wide enough. Perhaps you should practice this a bit before the wedding. As for dancing - that can be done too. Make sure your dress is bustled well. Can he lift his arms? If so, you two can hold hands and dance a bit. I did that with my Dad when he was in a nursing home. He would brighten up when he heard music. I would "lead" the chair around the floor. If there are dance studios near you, they may be able to help with ideas. Good luck with your planning. I'm sure however you work these things out, it will be lovely and a special time for you and your Dad.

For 'walking' you down the aisle, if he has a motorized wheelchair, he can drive with one hand and hold your hand with the other. If it is not motorized, it might be easiest to ask a family member to push him and that give him the freedom to hold your hand.

For the dance, I would double check that it is something that he would like to do and if so, invest in some time to figure out how it would look. try youtube for wedding wheelchair dances to see how other people move. Agree that you would need to bustle your dress for sure.

I agree, make sure you have a wide aisle and you can hold his hand. 

Also, if he sees a physio or occupational health nurse, maybe go with him one session and talk about the dance together. They may have good ideas about how to 'choreograph' a few moves (and may be able to incorporate some of these into his excercises). My physio friend is always looking for practical goals in her clients lives to work towards and mastering a dance move for a daughters wedding is really good motivation.
