two engagement parties? two bridal showers?

My fiance and I come opposite sides, I am from New York and he is from California. I am moving to California but all my family is still here in NY. We both come from two huge families so is it ok to have two engagement parties and two bridal showers to prevent someones side having to arrange 20+ people to travel in addition to traveling for the wedding? Help!!

Re: two engagement parties? two bridal showers?

  • I think that shoul be fine. Just be sure to label each of your parties after your family on the invitations: "youre invited to the Smith bridal shower in honor of your name." Something like that. Then your other guests won't feel obligated to go to both, and you won't feel weird for having two! Hope this helps!

  • Given the geography, this is fine.  The only thing I would say is, with the exception of wedding party members and immediate family, don't invite people to both parties - that just looks like you're fishing for double gifts.  Invite the West Coast people to the West Coast parties only, and invite the East Coast people to the East Coast parties only.

  • if other people throw them for you of course it's ok. if you throw yourself (selves) parties it's bad all around.
