Wedding Woes

Building Aesthetic

I'm getting married on September 22 and my venue coordinator called me today to say that the building that they're leasing the space from is going to be under construction, resulting in scaffolding outside of the building. STARTING FOUR DAYS BEFORE MY WEDDING! It's on a city block, it's an old bank and it ruins the whole front. It's not like it's a golf club and it's only going to be on one side. It's literally going to be covering the whole part of the building that you could see. SO FRUSTRATING! We were planning on a sparkler exit and everything at the end of the night :disappointed:

What does your contract say about construction?  This certainly is a disappointment.

Nothing about construction in the contract! Just a force majeure clause!
  • That's unfortunate, but like a PP said, I'm guessing you booked the venue for more than just the facade? Focus on that.  You're still marrying the person you love and your closest friends and family will be there.

Right of course, but it was part of the entire package and it definitely does take away from it. It's just more of a disappointment than anything else.

Yeah construction does not equal act of God. Does your contract have a photo stipulation or alternate exit?

I mean you may have to give up your sparkler exit, but I'm assuming you booked the place for reasons other than the exit view. I'd reach back out and ask for something else in return due to the construction. They're probably ameniable to that.
Nothing like that in the contract. We're fine with giving up the sparkler exit if needed but feel like we should be able to get something in return for the inconvenience. It was part of the overall experience and while it certainly won't ruin the day, there will be some parts that were not as I'd thought.

Have a margarita and move on.  You could try contacting the venue and voicing your concerns and see if they can offer an amenity such as additional apps since you are losing the aesthetic, but they don't have to honor that.

  • Eh I'd call back and demand they move the construction by 4 days. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and it's worth a shot.
  • Honestly, I don't see a sparkler exit working as well as it does on Pinterest/wedding mags anyway.  By that time, many of your guests will have left, and then you have to coordinate to make sure all the sparklers are lit at the same time.  I think this construction will save you the headache of getting it to work.  Maybe go to a nearby park with H after the reception for sparkler pics with just the 2 of you, and have your photog do one of those slow shutter speeds so you can "draw" in the air with them?

If your wedding is like most I've gone to, most people are hammered by the time the couple goes to leave. Most of the couples have just sneaked out at most of the weddings I've gone to.
  • IMO - have your sparkler exit anyway, scaffolding or not...  This is worthy of a cupcake and beverage of choice then move on, it's not worth working yourself up over - it's REALLY not!  Now - entire parking lot closed because of resurfacing, and no public parking for 2 miles, that's another story!  This, it's some construction scaffolding, it could make for some fun quirky pictures..
