Wedding Woes

Humpty Hump day

What's up?!  I just finished putting new desk chair together and then we're headed to Ikea to get the desk then Fresh Thyme for some fruits and veggies.

There is stupid drama.
Soccer related- last night one of the mom's was getting all intense about who was playing which level and blah, blah, blah.  I looked at her and said "I don't know much about soccer.  My kid is 8.  I know he leaves here with a smile on his face and he's playing better now than a year ago."  She just stared at my.  Roster for this weekend came out today.  6let made the top team and several top players from last year, her's included, did not.  I'm glad I'm not taking practice tomorrow.

IL related- they keep saying they want to come over.  They keep picking dates that don't work (even though they have the schedule).  They keep getting pissed.  I'm sorry we have soccer every Saturday and you have NFL games (to watch on tv) every Sunday.

Re: Humpty Hump day

  • It's like some parents are more concerned with bragging rights (for themselves) than they are for their kids' happiness.
Seriously.  I think at least half of my apprehension to having a kid comes from parents; parents like this, parents like my sister who are a shell of their former self, and other people I know who become baby martyrs.  All generations of parents couldn't have been this weird.

"Suzy's Mom" is the worst in kids sports.  Just let your kid play and have fun.  The chances of them actually making it anywhere are slim to none, so let them enjoy the sport.

I know some people who played youth hockey with a 1-2 players who ended up in the NHL.  They said that even at 8-9, these kids were so far ahead of where the rest of the team were that it was no surprised they made it to the pros.

  • I have to give it up to my cousins.  They played baseball and hockey since they were little.  They still play at age 27 and 25!  My siblings and I played on teams too, but it stopped at 16.  I think the real goal is to have your kids play well into their adult years.  For FUN.

Exactly. I don't even want babybelle to get this into sports unless HE is having fun. The chances of him making a career out of it are slim and, even if he does, many pro athletes have short careers that don't really fund retirement (which starts at like 40, sooner if injured).

And it's expensive and time consuming as shit. When I was 8, soccer practice was once a week with a 40 minute game on Saturdays. Now it's like practice is 3x/wk and the kids have double headers 2 hours away on Saturdays and 4 travel tournaments a year. F that shit.

  • I coached softball with my sister for 5 years, starting when my niece moved from t-ball to softball.  We had a little girl on our team who NEVER SWUNG THE BAT no matter what we did to help!  I called her my little statue.  Her mom kept saying baseball was in her blood because her great grandfather was a pitcher for a major league team.  Ummm, she didn't inherit those genes at all!  Sorry!

We had some crazy thunderstorms roll through last night and it kept me awake and I didn't sleep well at all.  DD slept through them!  I don't know how because one of the thunder cracks was so loud it woke H.  DD then decided to wake up at 6:15, so I even missed out on my last 45 minutes!

Yoga tonight at work.  Not sure what else, but H already has a migraine.  I hope it improves for him, sometimes only sleep stops them, though since I told him to switch from Tylenol to Excedrin, that helps.

@Sparklepants41 DD will be 6 months tomorrow and the first 6 weeks is already a blur to me!  Glad to hear the jaundice has cleared and Babysparkle is already back to her birth weight!

@6fsn I'm glad you said something to that mom! Sometimes parents need a reality check that they are kids and the main purpose of sports is fun.

  • We haven't pushed DD into sports mostly because of the time commitment and I don't want to spend money and time on something that is going to be just meh.   Her 2nd cousin eats, breathes and sleeps soccer.   For my cousin and his wife, signing him up for soccer is well worth all of their time and money.

She's going to start swim lessons again in the fall.   That will be one night a week for swim and one night a week for religious ed (2nd grade is the 1st reconciliation year and 1st Communion) and we just bought a boat.  I'm not interested in major weekend occupiers while the weather is still decent.

Every generation and group has a Suzy's mom.   Luckily our friends aren't doing that.
  • Yay @holyguacamole79! That's fantastic, and really great that the dean recognized all your work!
  • @holyguacamole79 That is a fantastic email....and congrats for finding your groove so quickly.  I could never be a teacher and have so much respect for your craft!

  • @OliveOilsMom I hope the Excedrin works for him.  Do you mean plain old Excedrin or Excedrin Migraine?  I have "Complex Migraine Disorder" according to specialists, which really just means that if I get a migraine it presents as a stroke.  I lose vision in usually one eye, I get a lot of tingling in an arm and leg and I won't be able to speak (like I know the words I want to say in my head, but can't get them out.  I actually missed an entire semester of law school because I had a 4 month migraine. . .  I was incapacitated and back and forth to doctors.  Anyway, the point of all this rambling is that if I feel the slightest symptoms coming on and take an Excedrin Migraine or two and lie day for 20-30 minutes I can stop the migraine before it progresses to full on crazytown. If I don't then all hope is lost. . . . I have ended up in the ER a few times getting medications to try to stop them.  One doctor told me that Esxcedrin Migraine is almost identical to some of the prescription meds they use for migraines.

I hope he feels better soon!

  • @koas16 He generally takes Excedrin Extra Strength.  He calls them eye ball headaches as that is where his pain centers.  His mom gets the exact same ones.  He has never experienced anything like you have.  That is so scary for you!  I hope you can keep avoiding them!

    @holyguacamole79 what a wonderful email!

@kaos16 my mom gets terrible migraines and excedrin migraine is one of the only things that works for her, over other migraine specific prescription meds. I've gotten a few of those complex migraines before and they're terrifying. The first one happened three years ago and I literally thought I was having a stroke. Then the hospital dragged their feet which was really frustrating. I have facial droop, slurring of speech, the "worst headache of my life," and numbness to one side. Why is it taking you over two hours to get me to CT?

SO and I got into an argument last night, so I spent the rest of the night upset and I'm still in a funk this morning. Plans are to do laundry and clean house and stop at the gym. The kitties are being total cuddle bugs right now, which makes me not want to do any of it. I'm also trying really hard not to spend money for the next two weeks, but I need to buy stuff from the store. I just know if I go, I'll end up buying more than what's on my list. I also have a new recipe I want to try for a shrimp marinara pesto zucchini noodle pasta, but I need to slow my roll and finish what we have as leftovers first.

Im also ambivalent towards kids, both because I'm not really a kid person, and because parents are nuts now. Why are there physical fights breaking out at t ball games? Why is everything a competition? People either seem to lose their minds. Having a kid will be stressful enough. I don't know if I can deal with the parents too.

    Edit: because their/there

  • @6fsn  urg some of these sports moms need to gtfo

    @holyguacamole79  that's a great email to get! :)

@levioosa  Kitties know you're upset still. They're trying to make you happy :)
  • Ugh. Day from hell. I had to deal with six emergencies today, and I lost a friend of 10 years because I privately told her that her Facebook rant was inappropriate and might trigger some people on her friends list. (She basically said that anyone who wasn't vegan needed to get off the planet.) I got a nasty e-mail back, we exchanged words, and I told her not to contact me again.

Now I feel guilty because she might be dealing with mental health issues and she was always so kind to me about my issues. I also feel sad about losing my friend. I have very few friends left from the first time I got sober more than ten years ago. I moved and started going to different meetings and don't see a lot of those people except on Facebook. Some people ditched me when I came out. I found out what some people were really like when they met FW. (FW is transgender.)

I have no regrets at all, but I miss having people that I have history with. On the way home from the town hall last night, I was driving through my old neighborhood, and I actually felt a little nostalgic, even though I wasn't all that crazy about it when I was living there.

I love my home and neighborhood. I love my fiancée and my newer friends. My family supports us 100 percent, as does FMIL. But I still feel a little sad.
  • Gauc- What a great compliment!! Must make you feel great.
    OWK- sorry about your friend.

We are about half way through vacation. Just arrived in Santorini this morning. Greece is incredible. Rhodes and Crete were both very cheap and excellent. Verdict is still out on Santorini, it is beautiful but it is going to blow my budget. Mykonos is next then Athens.

    Happy prudie day!
  • That sucks @OurWildKingdom, losing friends is hard no matter the circumstances. Nostalgia is hard, too. Every time I'm back in NYC with my college friends I miss them, the life I had there, but I remind myself of all the reasons I left and what I wouldn't have if I had stayed or went back. Let yourself feel sad about it, because it is sad, it's parts of your life you can't/don't want to go back to, but it doesn't mean you don't miss it.
  • @holyguacamole79, super nice email.  Makes you feel great, eh? :)
@MissJeanLouise, you're on my dream vacation.  It's sad to say, but ever since the Kardashians went, I've always wanted to go to Santorini and Mykonos.  Sad because i just admitted that I watch them.
@Ourwildkingdom, sorry she did that to you. Is it repairable?  Maybe you just need some time to both think things through and you could possibly repair what was done?

  • OWH - this happened yesterday? If you're feeling guilty about it and she's a friend of a whole decade, what's to keep you from reaching out and apologizing for your "never talk to me again" comments? It doesn't mean you need to rekindle the friendship if you don't want to, but at least it will relieve the guilt you're feeling.

I'm considering it, but I'm not ready to do that yet. I need to cool my jets and grieve the loss of that friendship.
