Wedding Woes

But seriously, how many weeks left?!

Really, going after DACA? I mean I'm not surprised, but was holding out this Administration wasn't going full heartless/rascist/xenophobic. Clearly I was wrong.

Re: But seriously, how many weeks left?!

  • I'm not sure what's more depressing; everything that's been done so far in such a short span of time, or how many weeks are left.

Sadly I wasn't surprised at all with this move. Just like I wasn't surprised when trump went to Houston and started off with saying "what a great turnout" he had.

I'm so worried for so many people I know. They work hard. They give so much. But I guess they just aren't good enough for America. Clearly inheriting millions of dollars and giving nothing back is the only way you're a real American.

As much as I am usually the last person to say anything positive about Trump, at least he SHOWED HIS FACE in the wake of a national disaster.  Instead of eating birthday cake, sipping champagne, and laughing it up with the movers and shakers of the world ***cough, cough, George W. Bush during Katrina, cough cough***.

So that's my dubious "positive" comment.  He didn't botch it as hard as GWB.

  • To answer your thread title question - too many.

T.Rump's bodyguard is leaving the administration now and supposedly T.Rump's got his feelers hurt by this one.  WTF was your bodyguard doing in your administration anyway!

I just hope that ACLU or the states (NY & WA are the ones I've heard of so far) step in and get the DACA decision stayed or overturned.  How sad for people (kids really!) who only know America as their home are going to be forced to leave.

There was recently a story about a South Korean who was adopted and raised in the Philly area.  He was never made a citizen because it wasn't commonly know at the time he was adopted that the children also needed to be naturalized. Many believed it was automatic. After some trouble, he was deported to South Korea without knowing anyone or the language.  He eventually committed suicide there.  While that young man was not brought here illegally, I can sadly see a similar fate for many DACA kids, if deported.

  • This is awful.  Growing up in Queens, I knew/know so many hardworking, intelligent, good people this will effect.  It's disgusting and heartbreaking all rolled into one.

I really miss the days of republicans (at least in my area) who voted red because they made lots of money and financially it was the best decision.  The Trump era has ushered in some much hate and such a lack of compassion.  From Syrian refugees to the extremely hardworking men and women from Mexico to DACA, there's been such a "too bad for them..not my problem" attitude. I can't believe I'm raising children in a world like this  :(
  • I actually think he has done a nice job with Harvey (minus his dumb comments about crowd size and seemed excitement about hurricane size).  He showed up a few times, FEMA is doing a good job and he granted pre-Irma emergencies for Florida, the USVI and Puerto Rico.

Although, I'm pissed at his attempt to bash the media by comparing them to the Coast Guard.  First, do you really wanted trained english majors doing the same job as trained first responders?  No.  Secondly, there are at least a dozen stories out there of journalists who dropped their mics,  and the story to pitch in and help when people were in danger.

However, this DACA move is repulsive.  I read yesterday that 76% of Republicans disagree with him.  I also read that he is just trying to force Congress into passing legislation so he can cancel the EO.  Which if that was his intent (I'm dubious) okay, but his delivery is just so damned bad every time.  There's many avenues for a President to move a legislative agenda without scaring the shit out of almost a million people.

Yes, I was thinking about this when I woke up at 4:30am and waited for DH to get out of bed so I could go back to sleep.

Because he made the the Evil Keebler Elf do the announcement and then tweeted (ugh x a frillion) that he'd 'revisit it' if Congress fails to do anything, I do wonder if he's trying to force Congress into passing anything and when they fail he can be the 'hero' by 'saving' DACA AND he gets to shit all over Congress for being ineffective.

I mean, I feel this is a stretch for him and his team because look at what has happened since January...but he has thinned the herd and who knows who Kelly is allowing access to him.  I know it's no longer the free for all it was.  People are being shut down left and right regarding access to the Trumpster Fire...which is probably a good and bad thing.

  • Shocking:  Our sexual assaulting president is expected to announce overturning rules that are "unfair" to those accused of sexual assault on college campuses.

Next weeks announcement:  Only you (ladies) can prevent campus rape!  Complete with a Smokey the Bear inspired mascot.
    F that guy.

I'm assuming that is in regards to campuses and campus police specifically?

I have to admit, and perhaps there is something I'm missing, but serious violent crimes should just go straight to the police anyway.  Not at all saying that as victim blaming.

I'm thinking back to my college days and putting on my "what if" shoes.  If I saw someone acting suspiciously, I'd call the campus police.  If someone broke into my car or broke into my hypothetical dorm room, I probably would call the campus police first and let them call/coordinate with the local police.

But, if I were physically assaulted...whether a rape or even just someone punching me...it would never have even occurred to me to call the campus police.  (Edited to add) **If I chose to report it**, I'd be calling the local police and then report the incident to the college at some point later in time.  Same if I witnessed someone being physically assaulted.

No one in their right mind would call the campus police first if they were the victim of or witnessed a stabbing on campus.  So why would rape be any different?  It shouldn't.

  • @southernbelle0915, I am so sorry to hear what happened to you and appreciate the better insight.  I do see where and how my post could be misunderstood and I corrected it.  I was just more thinking in terms of where there might be more support for the victim in terms of resources and a real investigation, when a victim has already chosen to report the crime.  I definitely did not mean to imply that a victim should report their crime or that it would be odd if they didn't.  I can understand a lot of reasons someone would not report a crime committed against them.  Including because they don't think the police can or will do anything, especially for sex crimes.

I didn't interpret your post negatively as your posts are compassionate, curious and introspective. What I took away was that IF you were to report it, you would go to local cops versus campus "cops", which would probably be a smart thing to do.

I just wanted to add to the general conversation the extra layer and perspective of someone who has gone through it and what went on in my own head in terms of reporting.

I will say that if that was my mindset ("nobody is going to do anything and I'm going to be shunned for reporting this") 12 years ago, any "overturning" of strides made to encourage reporting will bring us right back to, if not behind, where we were at that time.
