Childhood photos to decorate gift table?

Our coordinator recommended putting some engagement pictures on the table with our escort cards, which I am definitely going to do. I thought I would take it a step further and put some cute childhood pictures of us on our gift table.  I mentioned this to someone at work and she thought it was a really strange thing to do. Has anyone else done this?  Good idea?

I’ve seen a couple of childhood/yearbook photos at milestone birthday parties and in my circle there are large photo boards at wakes.  I haven’t seen childhood photos at a wedding.  To me they would seem out of place at a wedding...but if the wedding overall was amazing, they wouldn’t taint my experience in any way either.  Agree with your coworker that it’d be a bit strange.

  • I like the engagement photos but I think the childhood photos is unnecessary.

DD had a more casual and family focused reception.  She used childhood pictures to indicate table numbers.  It was a lot of work but it was well received.  She tried to coordinate the pictures, as well.  For example, Table 5 had a picture of DD and SIL in their Halloween costumes at the age of 5.

The table numbers jumped from 10 to 14, however, because neither found their “middle school years” to be “flattering”.  It was pretty funny!

I think this is a unique way to do table numbers. I would like this :)

It's a cute idea, but your guests probably won't notice them. I don't think wedding guests in general are really into bios or childhood photos of the couple. (There are of course exceptions.)
  • Your guests will enjoy them if you use them on the tables where they are sitting, rather than on the gifts table. I've been to a couple of weddings where they used photos of the couple at various ages to indicate the table numbers, like @MobKaz's daughter did. The guests had a lot of fun talking about them, and then went around to other tables to see the other pictures.

If you do this, you have to be low-key about it. Just display the photos with no bios or cutesy stories.

Don't put too much stuff on the gifts table. That shouldn't call attention to itself.
  • We did one of those foam display boards up so even if gifts were put on the gift table (novel I know, but "not expecting anything" so having something to adorn the table that people could glance at over the evening)...  One side was my photos growing up the other DH's and in the middle it was our dating/engagement pictures from traveling together.  It actually worked out well and a lot easier to transport than small pictures in frames..
