Backyard wedding, rain plan.

Hi all,
I'm planning a very small September wedding in my mom's very small backyard, and am stuck on how to prepare for potential rain.
I don't think I have enough space to potentially rent a tent, since the yard itself isn't huge, and there is a large deck and pergola in the middle (where the reception dinner is going to be held.
My initial thought was to get some plastic sheeting that could be secured to the wood of the pergola in case of a rainy day, but I don't think that's the most practical idea out there.
Any advice for a rain plan would be really great.
Thanks in advance!

How many guests will you have and will they fit inside the house?

If not can you rent a tent or awning? Even if there’s no rain, will you have shade covering the tables? I don’t know if you can rent awnings but would there be a way to cover the deck rather than the pergola?
  • I bet you could find a tent to rent. Think about when people go tailgating with tents, or to food festivals with vendor tents- you could fit a picnic table under one the size I'm thinking of.
I just did a quick Google for this and came up with "canopy" at Dick's Sporting Goods for $50.

If you don't have tents, you're going to have to have everyone eat indoors.

  • Since the guest list is presumably small enough to fit on a regular size deck comfortably, you could always make a reservation at a restaurant nearby as a backup since a group that size could likely be accommodated easily (I'm assuming 20 ppl or fewer).
  • How many people? That would help us with ideas. If it's 20 or so, like @Casadena guesses, then there's no reason why you can't get a few of those EZ-Up canopies and lash them together if you're in a pinch. But you definitely do need a rain plan!
